No Democrat nominated is not going to face a shitstorm from the Republicans, that's the truth of it. Both Obama and Clinton, and for that matter any other Democratic candidate, is going to be fried over supporting abortion rights, advocating civil unions, etc.
But I think the stakes of the game have changed this time. I don't think the American public is interested in listening to more moralizing from the party that has trashed our economy, tossed us into the endless quagmire of Iraq, and squandered any moral capital it might have had in sex and corruption scandals in Washington. Plus, you have to compare the personal lives of the Democrats to those of the Republicans. The Clintons are still married despite their problems and have raised an intelligent, hard-working daughter. Similarly, the Obamas seem to enjoy a good marriage and their children aren't any trouble. Of the Republicans, the only ones who can boast such clean records are Romney and Huckabee, neither of whom are doing particularly well in the primaries.
I was merely suggesting that it would be a bad idea for us to repeat the same mistakes we made in '04. We should vote for the person who best represents our ideas, regardless of how "electable" they apparently are. For me, that person is Clinton instead of Obama, but I will still gladly vote for Obama against a Republican if he is nominated.
And I think they both lose. The kid gets loser points, though, for being a creep and instigating this by calling an administrator at home.
I say this as a native Montanan who never got a single snow day or day off from school, even when the temperature got to -30. At that point the buses would stop running because diesel gels at around 0 degrees but people would still have to come to school. So I have exceptionally little sympathy for someone who complains about their school not being closed.
The woman was obviously not as nice as she could have been, but she was just reacting to some rude punk calling her home phone number over something totally insignificant.
Any Obama supporter who is childish and puerile enough to throw a hissy fit and vote for a Republican or not at all instead of Clinton in a general election richly, richly deserves the next 100 years in Iraq and the next several trillion dollars in debt.
Your roads are not built for snow?
Tell me, is there a secret method of building roads to handle snow, because if there is, I've not heard of it. The road directly outside my house, for example, is made by this fantastic method called dumping gravel onto the ground in what resembles a straight line. They don't even plow or salt the roads in my home state of Montana like they do here in Minnesota, where I go to school. And, no one taught me how to drive in snow. I took driver's ed during the summer. I drive a tiny Ford car with 2-wheel drive, non-studded tires, and no chains. Learning to drive in snow is a shitty, trial-by-fire experience no matter who you are or where you live. I can't speak for all communities, but in Montana, there is no magical service that comes and makes the roads all better for you after it has snowed a foot and a half. The people who only encounter snow rarely seem to be under the impression that we do. You just drive really slow and don't freak out when you start fishtailing and you deal with it and you get to school in one piece.
So once again, I say, I feel no sympathy whatsoever for communities that shut down in bad weather conditions. 3 inches of snow is not exactly the blizzard that shut down Denver for seven days.
I for one don't recall ever thinking that you in particular were biased against any given candidate.
Now if Tim Grieve would man up and explain why he's so eager to kiss Obama's ass and ignore anything positive that happens about Hillary, that would be nice. As far as I can tell, Grieve is the only really unashamedly biased 'journalist' on Salon right now.
I am not "judging" other people, merely commenting that driving in 3 inches of snow isn't that hard. A lot of us are stuck doing it a lot of the time. So I feel no sympathy for some whiny brat who calls a school administrator at home to complain about not getting a snow day, well after he has made it safely to school, presumably.
You want to complain about driving conditions, don't even get me started. I've driven one-lane gravel logging roads in the mountains on snow-coated solid ice. So for the umpteenth time I say, stop your whining. This kid should have stopped his whining too.
It seemed to be Obama was the one who likes to play nice with Republicans and only criticizes Democrats.
Maybe he deserves some criticism, since his so-called platform is looking more and more like Republican Lite.
How is Clinton the one responsible for splitting the party?
No Clinton supporter has threatened to bat for the other team if Obama is nominated (Unlike some others, we are not stupid enough to hand this country over to the likes of McCain or Giuliani just because our candidate didn't get picked). But a shit-ton of Obama supporters are doing that. So, really, who is more likely to split the party? Who exactly is being more divisive?
The only people Obama has united are affluent, over-educated young people. You'll notice that the people who are being hit hardest by our current economic recession are voting for Hillary.
