The ultimate manifestation of MLK's dream was a black president?
Oh really?
Point out where he says that in any of his famous speeches.
If a black person is president, it is not proof of any of MLK's dream. If a black person is president, it does not mean racism has been eliminated. And just because a white woman may be president, does not mean that woman's presidency is inherently a major setback for black rights.
MLK's dream was not about seeing a black person in the white house, per se, but rather, about a world in which all boys and girls, of every color, could grow up and know that they, too, could run for president and not be discounted simply because of their race or class or sex or creed.
And I agree with those who say Hillary's claim was not offensive and was, in fact, historically accurate. She was comparing LBJ to JFK, people. Read the quote again and get the hell over yourselves. You're seeing enemies and insults where there are none.
P.S. Do you think all the hope in the world would have done any bit of good for the black students attempting to attend Little Rock High School in 1957, if Dwight Eisenhower hadn't deployed the 101st Airborne to prevent the Arkansas National Guard from blocking them? No one is saying that great ideas don't originate from outside the political establishment, but the fact is, great laws are passed and enforced by courageous people within the political establishment. And God knows where we would be right now if the Civil Rights movement was still just an idea, instead of an idea that one president chose to put into law.
I lived in 6 different places by the age of 6, courtesy of my father's military career. I can tell you, there is nothing romantic about seeing every connection you have made slip away every summer as you are told that it is time, once again, to pack up and move.
I remember a lot of sadness, and a lot of bitterness of losing so many friends and having so much trouble gaining new ones. I remember having very little ability to socialize once we did settle down, because I was so unaccustomed to staying put. Throughout my childhood, my entire family was viewed as outsiders by our neighbors and our community, because my parents didn't come from the town, and I had been neither born nor raised there.
For a tiny kid faced by a big scary world, there is nothing more attractive than a sense of normalcy and predictability. You might enjoy your big romantic trip with the kids, but your kids will either resent it or not remember it at all.
The sad thing about Thrasher is that he/she thinks that he/she is accomplishing something for people of color, when in fact all he/she is doing is annoying the hell out of people who don't buy his/her crap.
If Obama had ever taken advice from someone like Thrasher, no non-black person would ever have voted for him, and precious few blacks.
the last seventeen times it was the Opus joke.
So what if someone mentions that Obama used to use drugs?
Is a statement of truth now somehow indicative of a lack of moral fiber for the one stating it?
People have no problem bringing up Bill Clinton's adultery when discussing his wife... and have no issue using it to cast aspersions on her morality. And she is not the adulterer. She is the victim of the adultery!
Yet, we cannot discuss the fact that Obama once violated the law... a violation for which many people now sit in prison, which causes our prison systems to be overrun, so that real criminals go free.
You're telling us that we can't comment on Obama's previous actions? Why not?
A teenage kid drinking alcohol might be a youthful indiscretion.
A teenage kid smoking pot might even be merely a youthful indiscretion.
But a middle-class teenage kid with no real troubles in the world snorting coke? I'm sorry, but I don't know anyone from my youth who was THAT indiscrete. Seriously.
Like IKEA, stores could just start charging for the use of plastic bags. I think it's like $.05 or $.10 for a shopping bag at IKEA?
This Christmas, I was staying with my family and had no car to drive (on account of I took the plane to get there). So I went back and forth between borrowing my dad's F-250 pickup (which he hates) and my mom's Prius (which she hates).
I have to say, I hate both of them as well (especially trying to park that damn truck). But I really liked my mom's old turbo-charged Beetle... and its gas mileage was as good as the Prius!
In other news, Michiganders do, actually, have an accent. And in most places, especially in the UP, it sort of looks like the kind of place where people wear a lot of flannel and shoot varmints. And gas stations more eagerly advertise "CIGARETTES! BEER!" than gas.
So clearly Romney is just trying to be a yokel and buy local. Or, ripping off Garrison Keillor's wit with none of the irony or intelligence.
Graffiti on their lilly-white walls? I was thinking more along the lines of "whited sepulchers."
I never snorted cocaine, smoked marijuana, or drank to excess. In fact, I really only consumed alcohol with my parents at restaurants. I never snuck out of the house to go party. In fact, I got a lot of awards for music and academics. And I had a life, with lots of friends.
Sorry, but not all of us have a dark past to hide. Some of us led perfectly normal lives without the aid of narcotics. And those of us who did wonder why we should vote for someone who led, by all accounts, a charmed life, but felt the need to snort coke anyway.
