Hollywood at its worst
[Read the article: "Nancy Drew"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I do agree with the posters who have said that today's Nancy Drew has been Veronica Mars. I'm disappointed to see this remake of Nancy, because of how they chose to remake the story.
Hollywood chose to take a smart, strong woman and make her a pariah because she doesn't wear the correct clothes and wears penny loafers. Hollywood in this case chose to mock an icon because of fashion. That's so far off the mark of the original stories that without the character's name on the marquee, I'm not sure I would have recognized her.
It's akin to remaking Harry Potter as one of those sophomoric teenage boy movies where they're trying to lose their virginity.

Can we say "The Producers"?
[Read the article: "Hairspray"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]This is exactly the same beef that I had with The Producers, a fine film by Mel Brooks that was remade just because it had become a hit on Broadway.
I was stunned 15 years ago, when I started reading movie tie-in books when the movie was based on a book. Now it appears that this Hollywood-knows-best attitude has come to films as well.

Serious?
[Read the article: I Like to Watch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Really? Are there people out there who felt that 2 and 1/2 men (actually about 3/4 these days given Angus' size) really deserved 1 Emmy nod, much less 3? The show has devolved into one long sex joke and not a very funny one at that. Go back to junior high if that's the best of TV comedy for you and let some more subtle and more funny actors and shows have a chance.

Just another asterisk
[Read the article: Thank you, Hank Aaron]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I believe that in a few years, Bonds' record will be just another asterisk with the comment "used steroids." How anyone can deny this is beyond me. We ridicule people for not seeing the evidence of global warming when it's obvious that ice is melting, yet people want to pretend that Barry Bonds didn't bulk up from an average size to superhuman at a time when most athletes are retiring from baseball.
If we can only watch sports with bulked up criminals, then I think I'll turn off the set.

Someone's else kids
[Read the article: Quote of the Day]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It's always easier to send someone else's children off to war to fight and die. This war won't end until its supporters are forced to send their children to Iraq. Then we'll pull out faster than our AG can lie.

Aw cmon
[Read the article: McCain backs Imus, but not Bonds]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Barry Bonds admitted to taking HGH in one of those "I didn't inhale" admissions. He claims that he didn't know what it was; however, he did take it. Salon criticizes global warming deniers for just such denials in the face of facts; now I get to see Salon do the same thing for a cheater.
When a person illegally boosts their career and skews competition, then yes, any records must be questioned (with an asterisk) or denied. Pine tar, betting, and steroids are just different versions of the same thing.
I'm trying to picture what the coverage would be like if a Republican admitted the same thing. Would Joan say the same things if McCain or Romney admitted to steroid abuse? What does that make her? Would we consider that racism too?
In general, I'm tired of the MSM asking these ridiculous questions of the candidates. This is just another version of MTV's "boxers or briefs" -- what does it matter?

And where does Laura vacation?
[Read the article: Number of the day]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]If you haven't noticed, his most recent trips to Crawford have all been without his spouse. Their paths rarely cross these days.
Makes you wonder what's going on there. Of course, we won't find out. I'm sure that's been classified as national security as well.

But the real question
[Read the article: Jenna Bush is just not the Winnebago-driving type]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Is why do I keep hearing about Bushie and Laura splitting up because GWB hit the booze again in the non-MSM and never from any of the larger news organizations? I'd like to hear more, as I have seen Bush drink near-beer a few times now in public.

Not regular men
[Read the article: Bronzer gods]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Both Efron and Wentz have been the subject of rampant speculation about their sexuality as well. I think it's a far stretch to say that a trend is developing based on two sexually ambiguous entertainers.

Speculation on Speculation
[Read the article: Should Bush open up the oil spigot?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Leonard's column says that probably isn't Bush's fault that oil prices are so high; however, how can we know? If Leonard would recall, Bush's energy policy team met in secrecy and took a case to the Supreme Court to keep its discussions secret.
Given the ferocity with which the administration fought to keep its policy determination secret, I can believe most anything. Given that gas prices are over $3, oil is nearing $100, oil is not coming out of Iraq, and refineries keep reducing their output, reasonable people could believe that Bush's policies have created this mess for the profit of its oil industry pals.

Knee jerk reactions
[Read the article: Quote of the day]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I can understand why it's easier to ban hugging than to try to get into the nuances of who gets to hug whom. While it's not ideal, it does protect students from groping, sexual harassment, and PDAs.
Are you really advocating a policy where when a hug occurs that each student has to be asked if they were ok with it? Maybe there could be a formed signed by the parent stating that they were ok with it too. The teacher could run and check to see if they have the proper paperwork. Then you'd have to make sure that the hug did not become a grope or anything more than a hug. Then of course, you'd have to ensure that both girls were not lesbians, bisexual or questioning because then it would become a PDA which is against the rules. The hug becomes sexual. If only one of them is LBQ, then perhaps it's sexual harassment. You'd have to watch the hug carefully to make sure that there weren't hidden pinches, punches or other assaults too. That's assault, also against the rules.
I'd rather have teachers teaching and not having to interpret every touch and monitor it. I grew up in a non-PDA school and I still hug when I feel like it. I learned boundaries, which are something I can use when deciding who to hug.
