  • video says it all

Hey Joan, if nothing else, you need a new videographer. Your back is against the wall. It has been for a long time. Give it up, girl. Hillary is a goner; gone, gone, gone, gone. She's not a quitter, but she should be, and so should you. Enough already. If you care more about this country than wailing about your particular peccadillos, then stop. Just stop. And start imploring her highness to stop as well. Every article, every word, any insinuation whatsoever that continuing this insane contest benefits anyone is pure narcissistic hubris. Stop!

  • democrats are doomed

[Read the article: A new low in Clinton bashing]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

There was a day when I thought the Republican party was doomed. Some of them are old school libertarians. Some of them are Jesus freaks. Some of them are know-it-all international interventionists. Some of them are xenophobic isolationists. Some of them are Ayn Randian me-uber-alles capitalist pig-dogs. The notion that they could somehow all assemble themselves under a big Republican umbrella as "conservatives" or "the right" or some such nondescript moniker convinced me that no matter how pathetic the Democratic nominee, they would be a shoo-in.

Leave it to the Democrats to hoist themselves by their own petards. We have the editor of an influential ezine tarring anyone who disagrees with her annointed choice of candidate as an Obama zealot, damn the consequences of trumpeting her opinions - unresearched, uninformed, meritocracy be damned I'm-the-bitch-in-charge and y'all have to listen to my bullshit - to hundreds of thousands of voters looking for insight or inspiration. Obviously in the wrong place.

I'm not trying to stroke Joan's ego by insinuating that she might actually be able to swing an election. Fat chance. No, this cycle that honor belongs to Hillary alone. Put this one little blip on your radar Joan: if Hillary wins the Democratic nomination, I will move not only myself but my entire family to another country - and I am _NOT_ an Obama supporter. Stop blaming Obama for your candidate's fizzle. She sucks. There's a damn good reason the Republican machinery wants her to run, and it's not because they know they can beat a woman; it's because she hasn't an iota of relevance to anyone who actually has a brain in their head.

I'm going to start looking abroad for a new home. Not because I believe Hillary stands a chance in hell of becoming the Democratic nominee (that was obvious ages ago), but because it's becoming increasingly clear that the Democrats are even more dysfunctional than the Republicans - and that's really saying something. This country is fucked. Big time. I'd like to believe there's some hope for this mentally challenged part of the world, but I'm increasingly convinced that the next President of the United States will be John McCain; and if that's not a sign of our tragic times, then you need new eyes.

Joan, you are a bona-fide idiot.

  • He should say the right thing

[Read the article: A boneheaded Bush administration lecture on science]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I daresay you sound like you are advocating that Mr. Schafer should play politics, rather than tell the truth. Or perchance you are even playing a little politics yourself? Intertwining politics and science is almost as uncouth as conflating religion and the state, but far more acceptable. But to the extent that science, real science, can inform our political discourse, I say hear hear. We should not condemn anyone who promotes that message. If we feel they are being disingenuous, then call them out on that. In fact, I don't believe Mr. Schafer is attempting to deceive anyone. He honestly believes that genetically modified crops and other such improvements to our agricultural output are real advancements, harmless, and a boon to society. He may be wrong, but let's debate that on the merits, not on the premise that his superiors are luddites, so he should follow suit. In fact, if he is taking a different position than his superiors, he should be given at least a little credit, if not applauded, for his courage.

BTW Andrew, I really love your articles, I read them religiously. I just wonder - how the hell do you keep up with all of this stuff?! Do you ever sleep? Thank you for condensing so much of the important things going on in the world into something I can digest. You are doing an amazing job and a great service.

  • injuries

[Read the article: Paul Pierce's resurrection]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Resurrection is right. But what does that knee feel like this morning? Maybe I'm just getting old, but I know that when I get a sprain, they don't just go away in a few days - they tighten up and feel much worse the days immediately following.

Now, I don't have an army of sports doctors tending to my injuries, and maybe with enough warming up and so on, Pierce will be able to overcome this, but as a Celtics fan, I'm worried that this is going to catch up with him for at least the next few games of the series. Maybe all of them, because the stress of upcoming games won't help him heal - in fact, might aggravate the problem.

I hope I'm wrong about all of that. I don't think we'll see much visible evidence if he's in pain - he'll wisely hide it as best he can. But if he doesn't have the quick step, then Jackson can move his coverage elsewhere and better isolate other players.

What a great game, though! Neck and neck the whole way! If Pierce is OK, Celtics all the way! Isolating Kobe the way they did really took away the Laker's steam. OTOH, Kobe's percentages were terrible. Garnett wasn't so hot from outside either though. I give the series to whichever team overcomes their jitters and gets their shots to drop. It's going to be decided by percentages.
