  • @ Lotus Feet - correcting the record on Reagan

Guess what happened when the Reagan tax cuts took hold.

Let's see: we tripled the National Debt, poverty went up, things got harder on the middle class, the rich got richer while they paid less - and then Reagan raised taxes anyway, twice. He just did it on things which disproportionately affected the poor and middle class - such as gasoline.

Also corporations started downsizing, cutting waste and utilizing technology and automation to reduce costs and increas their profits.

Yay! They started firing people, off-shoring, using their Cayman Island dodges to keep from paying even their small shrunken share, etc. etc. Oh, and Reagan decided to quietly violate the law and not enforce laws protecting unions. Tres awesome!

The government never downsizes, our Pelosi's are always dreaming up new programs to make it grow.

So I'm guessing that Nixon, Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush are all Pelosi's, right?

You do know that Reagan increased the size and power of the Federal government more than any other President in history - until GWB?

I can understand if you'd rather not know it...that's how it is, though.

As the government grows, it strangles the rest of the economy, and we are left with shortages instead of prosperity.

Interesting theory! Who's President now? Why, a conservative Republican who has made the Federal government grow to a ridiculous degree.

Can you please reconcile these realities? I'd love to see that.

20 years of listening to crazy, mad mad mad sermons?

You're right - crazy religion is scary! And we should be careful about people who agree with it. Like these scary people:

    1. Pat "9/11 was God's wrath because America allows homosexuals" Robertson

    2. Jerry "The ACLU is also to blame for 9/11" Falwell

And what about the frightening effect these hate-filled ministers have on our favorite candidates?

    1. John "They were agents of intolerance, until I needed their congregations' votes" McCain

    3. Sarah "The Iraq war is God's will" Palin

Anton The House Fairy got Barry & Michelle into their mansion?

You mean that 1 house they own? That they bought before Rezko was indicted for anything? What about it?

How many houses does McCain own? He doesn't even know. That's cool tho - he just dumped his first wife to get 'em. That's the American way.

Interesting you want to bring up crooked real estate figures! How about that Charles Keating character? You know, the one who directly paid McCain thousands of dollars, who McCain then tried to protect from investigation?

So, he backed the corrupt Stroger Family over the reform Democrat, Forest Claypool?

I see your Stroger and raise you John Doolittle, Bob Ney, Conrad Burns - all involved with the Jack Abramoff scandal, and all of whom McCain supported.

So what, how could he not back a brother African American?

    You know Obama's half-white, right?

That's why we guilty, ashamed of ourselves white liberals love bashing a fine, down to earth, smart gal named Sarah.

No, that Sarah sounds great. But I thought we're talking about Sarah Palin.

And it's not "bashing" her to point out that she doesn't know what the hell she's talking about; she doesn't have the knowledge to answer unscripted questions. Even worse, she flatly *refuses* to answer questions she's not prepared for. And, worst of all, she thinks the Iraq war is God's will, and McCain would put her 1 72-year-old man's heartbeat away from the nuclear button.

But besides that, she's great. Tell you what. You agree to do whatever she tells you to do. Me, I'll go with someone who actually knows what magazines they read.

  • @ AKA Smith - you're right, I don't know what Clinton was thinking

[Read the article: How Sarah Palin blew it]

I of course have no idea what Clinton was thinking - or Biden, or Romney for that matter. I can only talk about how the public responded to their being choked up.

But I do know that Clinton wasn't talking about a personal story when she teared up. And if we're talking about the impression of candidates in our culture, then the impression of her, right or wrong, was that she was reacting to stress.

And I stand by my statement, that if a male candidate was **Perceived** by the public to be crying in response to stress, as Clinton was **perceived** to be - then that male candidate's campaign would be toast.

Biologically, women are more likely to cry than men. This actually hormonal rather than weakness.

OK, sure. I don't personally think "weakness" has anything to do with tears. I see tears and being choked up as an honest expression of emotion, strength-neutral.

Are you of the opinion that this tendency should disqualify women from holding office?

No, I'm absolutely not of that opinion. I'm just saying that, in our culture, it is far more acceptable for a woman to cry in response to stress than a man. A man can show tears in relating something from the past, or some inspiring story of bravery, etc. etc. - but for a man **to be perceived** as showing tears or choking up in response to stress in the present, is for that man to be considered unsuited for power.

I don't make this rule for our culture - I oppose it. I'm just observing it how it currently appears to me.
