  • Che killed people. Tom Morello writes songs. I prefer Morello.

[Read the article: Three questions for Tom Morello]

And I don't see how Tom Morello's financial success has any relevance at all, as to whether or not his art is valid. That's like how wingnuts accuse Al Gore of hypocrisy, because he doesn't live in a straw hut and ride horses everywhere.

You do what you can in the system you are in; with success you have a bigger voice and more power in that system; with that voice and power you can try to change what you think is wrong with that system.

Looking for ideological purity is a distraction from the central point: change is needed and good for all our people. Whoever is pushing good ideas and directions is worth listening to. It's the ideas that matter, not ever the source.

  • Yep. Wisconsin incident covered here.

    Unreal.

Oh, and it turns out another attorney voluntarily resigned, and received $1.5 mil to represent the Republican she was investigating right before she resigned.

    !!!

    Mayberry Machiavellis, indeed....

  • Can't disagree more about "The TV Set"

[Read the article: Beyond the Multiplex]

You know, the movie with Duchovny and Weaver, that this reviewer apparently hated. I just saw it, and I loved it.

Here's the thing: the movie itself is uncompromising. It's not a feelgood comedy. It's dark humor at it's best. Which may be why people felt deflated. I don't know.

  • Guess that vote for Nader in 2000 really didn't matter after all

[Read the article: Abortion and the court, or the silver lining that isn't]

Right? Since there's no difference between Bush and Gore anyway.

Yes, I'm still flogging that horse. I want everyone to realize by the flying dead horseflesh that this is one of many, many things that have happened in the US and the WORLD because Ralph had to run his vanity campaign, and give Bushco the chance to slither in, seven long years ago.

Nader had and has a right to run. We all have the right to do any number of stupid, stupid things with horrendous long-term consequences for everyone around us. That doesn't mean they aren't stupid things to do.

Now among many other consequences, the SCOTUS is packed with rightwingers.

    Thanks, Ralph. Way to go.

  • Rolling Stone loses it at 27

[Read the article: Rolling Stone hits the big 4-0]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The list does ok until # 27, and then it just blows it. Were the songs selected per year? If so, that's the year they lost touch.

    My objections:

The White Stripes - nope. They're good, just not great, and so far not world changing in any way.

Britney Spears - the Suzie Q of our times. Nope.

The Cure - Just like Heaven - this changed nothing, as far as I can tell. Nor did the Cure. I don't hate them, but they're a very singular band with a unique sound and thing, and they just change much in the way of music IMHO.

Black Flag - TV Party - nope.

In their place, let me suggest:

    1) Parliament Funkadelic. "Atomic Dog", of course. Needed and missing.

    2) Where's Black Sabbath? "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath?" Or "Paranoid". Or "Sweet Leaf". Launched heavy metal? Remember them? A criminal omission.

    3) WHERE is MINOR THREAT?? "Bottled Violence"? "Cashing In?" Come on. Ian Mackaye almost single-headedly brings Skinhead punk to the US.

    4) WHERE IS THE POLICE??? "Roxanne". Or any one of any number of their other songs. They spearhead New Wave music, and merge punk, reggae pop and jazz into rock.

  • I can see that's how he justifies his actions - but I don't think those are the reasons FOR his actions

[Read the article: From Norman Rockwell to Abu Ghraib]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Almost all human beings need to find some way to justify their actions so that they look good, even if only to themselves. Even most serial killers have elaborate tales of persecution, so that they can view themselves as victims.

So I can see George W. Bush insulating himself from the reasons of his actions, with just these sorts of bromides, airs and poses.

But it's his actions that are the real issue. And his actions are so poisonous I understand why he would want to shellac them with layers of puerile Americana.

Bush invaded Iraq because he wanted their stuff, and he wanted to show he was a bigger man than his father. Then he justifies this feeling with his cowboy mindset. Bush let Abu Ghraib happen and almost certainly encouraged it, because in his mind the Iraqis were just a buncha brown animals interfering with US control of Iraq. Bush has let loose an incredibly cynical campaign of postmodern manipulation of the media, because he doesn't think anyone who is outside of his personal circle deserves to know anything he finds inconvenient. Bush isn't bothered a bit by incompetence or corruption - all he cares about is if someone has loyalty to his gang.

And I bet this troubles him, in another part of his soul. Which is why he is turning to American bromides to soothe it. But I don't think his presidential style is at the root of it - I think that's just the makeup he puts on, so he doesn't see his rabies in the mirror.

  • OMG Shoes - $300 shoes!

This is one of the funniest home-made videos I've seen in ages.

The only other thing I found near as funny, are the outtakes of director _ absolutely losing his $#!+ at Lily Tomlin on the set of "I Heart Huckabees".

Those are my votes for great youtubery...
