  • Nonsense - you don't have to choose between serving others and fulfilment.

[Read the article: I went to Nicaragua to help humanity -- now get me out of here, please!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Mr. Tennis, ordinarily I love your writing and advice, but here I think you're way off. This 'serve others, OR be comfortable' way of thinking is a false dichotomy. It plays into a martyr-style way of thinking.

What she needs to do is find a way to serve others AND fulfill her own desires.

Become the head of Nicaragua's clinics. Get a job for the UN or a private charity doing the same. Or start a business or non-profit in Nicaragua doing the same.

Or something else for Nicaragua. Or for another country. Or for people back in the US. Or do something else. But she doesn't have to choose between serving others and selfish satisfaction - she can have both, very well.

You touch on this towards the end of your response - but it should be in the front of it. With this either-or nonsense entirely removed.

IMHO, with tough love for you and admiration for your otherwise typically awesome and amazing writing,

    ~j : )

  • At least Joe's no longer a Democrat

[Read the article: The Bush plan gets some love -- and you can guess from whom]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

So his words can't be used to weaken the Democrats' otherwise unified front.

  • Consider too, that he's coming clean about it

[Read the article: A business deal with a friend went bad, and he never paid me back]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

it's very possible he let it go, because he didn't think it was a big deal to you.

I say, once the check comes, in addition to going through the introspection Cary recommended: drop it.

Drop the whole matter, and let it go.

Seriously. What good does it do anyone to hold a grudge, to stay angry, to NOT forgive someone if they can?

You (the original letter writer) wonder if you can let it go.

I assert that you can, if you say you can.

That doesn't mean go back into more biz arrangements; it just means not holding it against him. My $.02.

  • Harriet Miers. Secret Enron meetings, documents still not released.

[Read the article: Bush administration: "Mostly free of scandal"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Not to mention:

    - pre-9/11 Intelligence Failures

    - White House directly paying pundits for positive coverage

    - Firing a man because he was going to tell the truth to congress about the cost of Medicare

    - Mining accidents linked to reduced EPA and OSHA enforcement

    - EPA attitude so lax that loyal conservative Christie Whitman, no environmental nut by any means, is forced to resign.

    - Sex Education Misinformation

    - Sibel Edmonds' firing as whistleblower - and the rest of that scandal is still under Patriot Act seal

    etc. etc.

Wow. Can't believe some can say that this the first scandal, and still fit their balls in the room they're saying it. He must have them carted in on a handtruck.

As a matter of fact, I bet a scandal-per-month breakdown is possible, with at least 2 unique scandals per month is possible.

  • Wikipedia is as or more accurate than the Britannica

[Read the article: The "history war" in Northeast Asia]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

According to a Nature study, Wikipedia's articles contained just barely more errors than the Britannica.

    http://news.com.com/2100-1038_3-5997332.html

This is particularly impressive to me, considering the greater volume of information in Wikipedia. (Does the Britannica even have an *article* on the 80's TV show "Simon & Simon", or the rock group Clutch?)

And as Wikipedia articles are typically longer, if one adjusts for that fact, WIkipedia's error rate is *lower* than Britannica's.

    http://blog.case.edu/aaron.shaffer/2005/12/16/accuracy_wikipedia_vs_britannica

The issues that Wikipedia is facing are issues in all levels of our media: when there's shouting going on all, all different interpretations of facts, and even different facts themselves, will be thrown around until there's need for an adult referee.

But the author's instinct to check out Wikipedia for the good 411 on almost any topic is IMHO a correct one.

As a final point, if you don't know what IMHO means, don't bother looking it up in the Britannica.

  • Don't let fools acting foolish hurt your friendship

[Read the article: My best friend's husband insulted me]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I would personally suggest you accept his attempt at an apology, and continue your friendship with your friend.

This man is some sort of macho on the outside, scared child on the inside. In his own constricted, painful world, he probably thought he was doing you some sort of favor. For him to even attempt the insufficient apology he made, and to call you up to do it, is really some sort of large step from the sad, tied-up windowless world he lives in. Consider it a growth from being emotionally 3 years old to emotionally 5.

He must have some redeeming value, to have been married to your friend for so long.

It may not be "fair", that you have to show him the generosity of spirit to let this go. But it is definitely "good" and also, most importantly, good for you, your friend and even for him.

  • Get him a male nurse

And hope for the best....that's all I can say.

  • Proofing crit

    [Read the article: "Grindhouse"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"bounteous breasts, spurting blood and careering cars," I think you mean 'careening' cars.

    Don't mind me, I'm a technical writer. :)

Otherwise, great review and I look forward to seeing the movie.

  • Katie W. - consider me corrected

    [Read the article: "Grindhouse"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It would appear my careering proofing inclinations have careened off into my forced correction.

Incidentally, now that I realize 'career' is a synonym for wandering directions...how coincidentally fitting.
