What a disappointing bunch of viewers the lot of you posters are! “John from Cincinnati” deserves a much better audience, but maybe even HBO viewers have been dumbed down beyond recognition as the Bush years take a toll on us all!
And Heather, if the only kind of story you can follow is one where your hand is held from point A to point B … geez … maybe you’re just not smart enough to be reviewing "John from Cincinnati." I’m “getting it,” and I’m not that smart … also not doing any drugs to “get it.”
The show is a terrific and unique piece of storytelling. I admit, even though I tried repeatedly, I never “got into” “Deadwood.” But I did immediately recognize the same Shakespearean flare in the writing, the love of the word, dialogue spun out in all sorts of interesting directions. So I figured it was the “Deadwood” writers before I knew it was.
But maybe I just match the HBO demographic exactly, because from “Six Feet Under” to “The Sopranos,” “Big Love,” “Carnaval,” “Entourage” and “Flight of the Conchords” … they all hit the mark for me as terrific work.
I hate to do a tit for tat, but some of the feedback is just stupid … too white? Give me a freakin’ break! This isn’t a documentary. Let an artist have his vision for god’s sake. What P.C. wagon are you riding? And not enough surfing? What show are you watching? I’m seeing surfing. Plus, can you follow the concept of using surfing as a theme?
I'm getting all pissed off just like Butchie!
And don’t be bagging on the kid! Does he come across as an actor’s actor? No. But he comes across as real kid, which I think is a terrifc stroke of casting genius. Ditto the casting genius on the rest of the cast as well.
So many unfair knocks, you folks! And how can you miss the sweetness & tenderness of tough chick Kai keeping the faith all the years for Butchie. And aren’t you curious where Mitch has been? And what he’s going to contribute when he gets back? And what about Butchie? Has he kicked the needle? And is Cissy going to forgive herself and stop being a shrew? Will the porn star marry the promoter, and will they both then find their redemption?
Hey, how can you not look forward to the potential for redemption for the Yost bunch? Isn’t that what a “Christ” story is all about?
Love the show!
I don't see how anyone can defend this man. Everything the Bush boy king has done has been a failure. He should either resign or be impeached.
In response to one of the letter writers ... Gee ... are we supposed to be sympathetic that someone might have to show some personal responsibility and not have a baby if (1) they have no money and (2) the country has gone into the shitter? Birthrates did drop in the U.S. during the Great Depression, which would seem to be a reasoned response when people can't put food on the table.
Wake up people, the world is frickin overpopulated with 6 billion people, and it's not expected to top out until 10 or 12 billion, depending on which dire estimates you want to look at. Giving birth is not the end all; you maybe could figure out some other way to contribute to a better world.
Yes, there are many policies which have lead to the shitstorm that's hitting this country -- which will also reverberate around the world -- but a mantra of continued growth (that includes population growth) and consumption has contributed to much of this disaster.
The headline, “At the height of the real estate bubble, I was desperate to buy a home,” was a clear indicator I was not going to like the writer of this story. Anyone who was so hot to buy into what at the time was clearly a bubble – and I can say that not speaking with hindsight, as I was writing about this topic a few years ago – gets zero sympathy, particularly when the writer knew the entire proposition was based on scamming the next guy. Lovely morality there. I agree with the people who note that it’s not necessary to live in New York if you’re a freelance writer. Bottom line ... if you don’t make enough money to put 20 percent down on a house, have a reasonable mortgage and have money stashed for lean times, you shouldn’t be considering buying a house. And if you don’t make enough money to support a family, you shouldn’t be bringing children into the world. These are the types of women who drive husbands to the grave prematurely. This whole excerpt made me sick. Yuck.
