  • Eat more protein and natural FATS to save your life! Really... it's true.... I'm not kidding.

I was a normal sized child because I ate mom's home cooked food (plenty of meat) and was very active. As I matured, I slowed down and gained a few pounds but nothing major. My Dr. put me on a diet at 25 years old when I was only about 10 lbs over what would have been "normal". I starved. It didn't work. I regained 20 lbs. I tried low calorie again to get that off. I regained 40 lbs. A few years later, another Dr. put me on a strict Adkins-like diet. I lost 30 Lbs and eventually regained...you guessed it, 60 lbs. Then, came the low fat craze. I tried it as everybody did. Lost some - gained more. I had to have a major surgery so Dr. told me I HAD to lose 50 lbs. I did it by exercising 2-3 hrs a day every day. Yes, I did it, but broke my foot in the process and gradually regained the 50 lbs and much more all the while eating what I was EDUCATED TO BELIEVE was a healthy, balanced diet - low fat, veggies, whole grains, those little packs of Equal or Sweet 'n' low in my tea. I began to hurt and get tired. Then, the ultimate slap-in-the-face. I had diabetes. Doctors said, "No more sweets...EVER." Well, I knew sugar is just another carbohydrates like bread to the body. How could potatos and fruit be OK if sugar is taboo? I began to read even more on nutrition and I discovered, on my own, Dr. Bernstein's book "The Diabetes Solution". He explains it all. (He had to learn because he was a dying diabetic at a very young age.) Carbohydrates are the enemy of the diabetic and not really great for anybody. Fats are not going to hurt you in any way. They don't cause clogging of arteries or high blood pressure. Fats don't even cause you to get fat. The enemy is CORN (in all it's many guises), white potatoes, white bread, sugars, and most oils. (hydrogenated oils cause inflamation) When our grandparents were eating lard they were better off than we are when we eat these manufactured fats like margarine. I HAD to change my way of eating and now I'm losing weight without starving, and my pain has subsided. Don't wait until everybody in America has diabetes and /or heart disease to find out about the faulty diet that has been pushed on Americans. I wish someone had told me sooner. I reccommend Gary Taubes' book too, as another reader suggested, but Dr. Bernstein should be read by everyone. His book is equiping me with the knowledge to save my own life. Eat more butter!

  • We don't need her; she needs us.

[Read the article: Hillary without tears]

When Mrs. Clinton (we don't say Fred do we? Why do we say Hillary?) broke down and showed emotion in New Hampshire I felt for her until she explained her emotion was because this wonderful country needs her. She is suffering so much for us. BS! She could have said, "I do this because I can!" or "I do this because I want to blaze a trail for young women. I want to make it easier for my daughter in the future if she decides to go into politics." That would have been honest. Mrs. Clinton knows and we know that she is close to the positions of Edwards and Obama and any of them would make a good leader. I do respect her for how she has handled her husband's betrayal in the past. Remember, she is only responsible for her own morality and it takes great courage and character to continue to honor her pledge in marriage to a man who has so fundamentally betrayed her in so many ways. One thing I think you cannot deny now is Bill's regard for her after the emotional way he has come to her defense against Obama. Just like a husband. I too will be voting for the Democratic nominee whom ever it is. The alternative is too scary.

  • The mean, smart girl in high school

[Read the article: The GOP's cheerful viciousness]

Glenn is right in every point he made about Palin's snarky speech. By the way, she is still wearing the unflattering prom hairdo from the '70's. Around here they call it "church lady" hair - church ladies are not so vicious though.

The Democrats need to remind the voters of the snotty, selfish smart girl in school who wouldn't ever help anyone else with their homework. ( You know... you had one in your class too!) The folks who vote Republicans now were the same ones that resented the uppity, know it all, Miss Perfect in high school. I know it's a stupid way to win an election - but we NEED to win this one!

Obama shouldn't be the one to do it, though. He is the nice, popular guy from High School who always had time to talk to everyone. Biden and Clinton have to do it!
