I can guess your definition of a thoughtful, mature interesting male. Something to do with a guy learning to only say things women want to hear, only speaking when spoken to, and only doing those things that interest women who like men who do stereotypically male things- the male ghetto.
Nice strawman. I never told you my definition, but i think your definition is only for you -- it's your perfect strawman. You don't want to hear what real women think is "thoughful, mature and interesting." Even if we tell you, and our definitions will be different, you will simply ignore them, if they don't fit in with what you think women want men to be. It seems you're completely disconnected from reality. The claims you make about "all women" and on behalf of "all men" are completely different from all the men and women I know. And i imagine most women on Salon Letters feel the same way. My definition of someone thoughtful, mature and interesting has nothing to do with "stereotypically male things."
Plus, speaking of "only pseaking when spoken to," (a) I don't know one single man or woman who wants that from their parnter, (b) you're the one who wants to pay by the hour. you don't want to have a real relationship -- you want to pay women money to do what you want them to do. Talk about slavery.
don't believe me? Your beloved Russia, Italy, France, and most other places on the planet are FILLED with men who women complain about constantly for being immature, unthoughtful, and uninteresting.
1) I don't love Russia. If you actually bothered to read what i write, instead of just assuming what you think I write, you'd know that.
2) Clearly, you've never been to France or Italy, or known any French or Italian people, male or female. How can you possibly say that women in france complain that men are "immature, unthoughtful and uninteresting?" French people, at least the ones i've encountered, are much more likely to be VERY interesting than Americans. Have you evern heard of Ecole Normale Superieure? Camus, Sartre, Derrida? Voltaire, Diderot, Condillac? Gericault, David, Ingres? Debussy, Berlioz, Chopin? MC Solaar? Many French people are know are steeped in their incredibly rich and varied and interesting culture, much more so than their american counterparts.
I really have no idea what you're talking about, and by your statements you show how unexposed and ignorant you are.
EVER WONDER WHY men cultivate those things in themselves when THEORETICALLY ACCORDING TO WOMEN men would do so much better with the women around them to be thoughful and mature and interesting?
It is because men are then the equivalent of UNFREE SLAVES to the women.

[Read more letters about this article: Here]Going after Foley & the Republicans with this -- it probably has to be done, if for revenge purposes only, after all the nasty campaign and nasty smear tricks the shameless Switboaters, Karl Roves and other assorted republicans have done to the Democrats.
But my heart just isn't in it.
It's true, the "boy" was 17, he knew what he was doing. And it's true, Foley is total hypocrite, it's true that this may even be illegal (depends on the age of consent), and it's true that it's this kind of stupid shit that gets americans' attention, not the NSA wiretapping or Guantanamo bay or any of the other enormously more important issues.
But exploiting this to win just feels so LOW.
Yes, it must be done. Because Republicans wouldn't and won't hesitate to do the same to Democrats. Because it's time to take back at least one branch of government, even if it's expensive to do so (ethically).
It's regrettable that it has to come to things like this.

16 and 17 year olds do not "know what they are doing". They may be sexually active but these are two different things. That's why most STI's, including HIV, and unwanted pregnancies occur between the ages of 15 and 25. Young people do NOT know what they're doing.
I'm not defending Foley here by any means, but are you saying there is no difference between a 24 year old and a 17 year old? That they both don't know what they're doing? Because, at least legally, in many states, there is a big difference. The average age of first sexual intercourse in this country is 17.
I think the best thing to challenge anyone desiring to pass blame to the victim is what several posters are suggesting. It's your 16/17 year old son or daughter. It's a 54 year old (I don't care which sex). Do you approve? Does society approve? Is it "normal" to you? Would you let the emails go on as harmless flirtation?
No, 54 year old + 17 year old is looked down upon, and is also illega. There's a 37-year difference there. But a 55 year old and an 18 year old => no longer illegal. Perhaps not palatable, but perfectly legal.
The fact that the kid was 17 in and of itself is not the horrible thing here -- it's Foley's age that is disturbing, right? A 17 year old and a 19 year old, although illegal, seems a lot less horrible than an 18 year old and a 55 year old, although legal, right?
I wouldn't think any better of Foley if the young man was 18, instead of 16 or 17. So stop screaming about the young man's age. It's not about his age -- it's about Foley's age.
