It IS Important to the Story

True, but le castor was wrong - Saddam was a dictator - Sontag was a social critic and Leibowitz is a photographer.

Well, newsflash, people are often more than one thing. Saddam is from Tikrit, Saddam is male, Saddam has an age, Saddam is/was a member of the Baath party. Suppose it came out that Saddam had a secret wife, should Newsweek not report on it because he never identified himself as the husband of this woman, or never admitted the marriage? Just like Liebowitz and Sontag were more than just their professions. You could call Sontag a philosopher, even if she never called herself that. Also, the article about Leibowitz was not only about her professional, but also about her personal life, and you would think that her relationship with Sontag would be an important component of that.

That she might also be gay is besides the point, whereas Sadam's being a dictator - aside from well documented, is intrinsic to any reporting on his life. Since Sontag kept her sex life to herself - as does Liebowitz, and since their sexuality MAY inform their work but does not define it - unlike Saddams being a dictator, then why is Newsweek remiss to skip over pure speculation (Sontag was married and never lived with Liebowitz, and neither woman has admitted to any affair) - or even if not speculation, unimportant to any story

Unimportant to any story? I think it's important to this particular story, which not only focuses on a book, but Liebowitz's life and personal grief and relationship with Sontag.

Not in my name, again.

1) This makes me want to puke. I was born in the USSR, and left because things like this were done in my name. Now, the leader of the free world, the "give me your tired masses," the land of democracy is going down the same path. I cannot stand by and let this be done in my name, but other than vote, which i do, what else can I do?!

2) Hamdi...ah Hamdi. The US citizen of Saudi descent who was imprisoned indefinitely until the supreme court said that US citizens should have the ability to challenge their detentions in court. (a) anyone remember John Walker Lindh, the american taleban? He wasn't sent to guantanamo, he was tried and sentenced in US criminal court. What's the different between Hamdi and Lindh? Both are american citizens, but one is an Arab, and the other is white. (b) whatever happened to Hamdi? This is truly bizarre: the US government agreed to release him to Saudi Arabia (a place of which he is not a citizen), without charging him with anything, in exchange for his US citizenship. Truly strange.

3) Yeah, i sure hope the next president can use his unitary power and this legislation to send this whole administration to Guantanamo bay for the rest of their lives. I'm so fking serious.

RE: Outing

I don't think Newsweek would be outing anyone. Just do a search for "susan sontag annie liebowitz":

Tidbits Now Declassified

And Democrats and Salon.com must do everything in their power to make this report the midterm election issue, because it is daming. It directly contradicts most of what Bush has been saying since April, and before. It demonstraces how much he has been misleading the american people.

The Detainee bill must be renegotiated because of this report, because the threats and analysis in this report do not support torturing or indefinitely detaining terrorists. On the contrary, giving these powers to the president would directly contracdict intelligence recommendations.

Parson Jim

Feminist vilification in the domestic violence industry is so prevalent you can just google "men domestic violence abuse" and see any number of feminist lies about men.

If there ever were a movement that infantilized and coddled women, it most certainly is American feminism. Unless you're living under a rock, it's not hard to tell by looking at the media all around you.

Wake up, Beaver, the bigotry that you embrace as feminism has led to all of us men in America getting wise.

Good luck with your future hysterectomy, and I hope you've saved up enough for cat food an hormone supplements for your retirement.....

You're rude and extreme. It's impossible to have a polite discussion with you on this topic. Why are you so bitter, so rude, so vile? I don't know. But i hope you get better.

If you want to be polite and reasonable, then i'll be more than happy to discuss these issues with you.

Pyrian - your accusations are almost not worthy of a response

It was very much a coincidence, i hate to disappoint. I'm not homophobic at all. Perhaps it was a poor choice for an analogy, but I assure you did not mean to equate lesbianism with totalitarianism. It would be absurd to think so, if you review my previous posts.

Your analysis was an easy one, seemingly trying to find something to post in outrage. Perhaps we could actually discuss the issues instead of my unfortunate analogy?
