Original article: Women's travel tips

Does this strike anyone as kind of patronizing?

Like, if you're a woman, you have to worry about safety? But if you're a man, who statistically has a much greater chance of being a victim every crime except rape, you don't? No one ever writes articles about where men should worry about their safety. It's either "everyone should worry about country X" or " minority group Y should worry about country X" (like racial minorties, women, gays, etc.)

Just more of conceptualizing women as "the other" or "the abnormal"...

The LW is being much too hard on herself

Perhaps it was a lapse in judgment, though no crime has committed, but i don;t think she deserves to lose her job over this.

She should just move on.

All you need to know

I was on these boards for a long time and took a few months off. -LeCastor

And all you learned was to pay for stuff you used to get for free.

That says all we need to know.

-- Have a nice day somewhere else.

Gosh, you're right. How stupid to contribute money to something you believe in, to a website that does excellent reporting. How stupid to understand that websites don't run on good intentions, and reporters can't feed themselves by reading insults in the Letters section. What a moron I am for paying for what i used to get for free, except that i can't get Wired or Rolling Stone for free, and $30 is a pretty fair price for a subscription to both. How silly of me to earn some money over the summer and then spend it on things I like. What a foolish attitude. Finally, i know i am so dumb with money, in spite of having a master's in finance -- that's why i'm a summer associate at an investment bank. What imbeciles they are for hiring me after all those rounds of interviews -- i really fooled them!

Letters Section is just the way i left it in May

well, she's back and not any smarter

2) I actually work in an investment bank, and there is no way that you do.

*She said before she was clerking in a legal internship. Maybe she's holding down two high-powered summer jobs. maybe she's lying her ass off. :)

"clerking in a legal internship"? What a moron you are. You don't "clerk" at a legal internship. You "clerk" for a judge. Yes, i work in the legal department of an investment bank. It's really not such a stretch of the imagination to imagine that a large investment bank would have a legal department. It would be great for you if i were lying my ass off -- but the truth hurts more, don't it?

c) you have so much time to post on salon,

*Click on her name and you'll see someone named LeCastor (subscription) has posted a few dozen letters in a few days. Scroll for "LeCastor" before her subscription and you'll find she often posted several dozen letters a day. A day.

Yes, i'm a summer intern. I have some free time. No Name Given, on the other hand, is allegedly a very wealthy investment banker. And if you know any investment bankers, you know that they don't have a lot of free time.

d) you're incredibly rude,

*Read any LeCastor letter and you'll understand the irony of LaCastor calling anyone "incredibly rude."

At least I don't call anyone "cunt."

There is no way that any self-respecting bank would ever even let you onto a floor where others are speaking to clients, for fear of scaring the clients away. And there's no way in hell that you would be able to price a bond or put together a term sheet, with your lack of logic skills, and how much time you spend insulting people on the internet. Plus, your coworkers would hate your attitude so much that you would be let go.

-- LeCastor

*This final "friendly" piece of advice from someone who knows nothing of which she blathers. If ever the slur "c*nt" was appropriate, this self-named "The Beaver" fits it to a T...obviously not an IUD.

Wow, making fun of someone for having an IUD. I'm not sure how you thought that one through. Is there something shameful in having one that I am not aware of? You don't really make a lot of sense. But best of luck to you.

Blame Islam?

It's pretty idiotic to "blame it on Islam." There are so many different kinds of Islam, from Sufi to Wahabism. It exists from Bosnia to Indonesia to Mongolia to Burkina Faso. It would be like saying that Unitarians and Mormons, or Lubavich and Reform, all the same and equally culpable for the atrocities committed by Christians and Jews, respectively.

People, get a clue. There are pre-existing cultures that take religions and adapt them. One could argue that Islam was the Arabian incarnation of Judeo-Christianity. Jesus is depicted as white, black, Asian, etc. depending on where the christians are. You can blame Islam, ignorantly, for all sorts of things; the clerics in Iran use it cynically to promote their own brand of authoritarianism. It is, like any other religious text, open to interpretation, and is a vehicle for agendas, not an agenda in itself.

Original article: I found my dad's gay porn

whether or not to talk to him depends on a lot of things

and this is assuming that the porn is probably the dad's, and not the mom's, or on a computer through a virus:

1) is this person 15 or 20 or 25?

2) why would his/her brothers disown him?

3) maybe the mother is aware?

4) how old is the dad?

5) is the person male or female?

6) how close are the person and the dad?

etc.

It seems Cary often (not just in this letter) either ignorantly assumes things, or fails to include crucial facts that he is sure of that we are in the dark about, like the gender and age of the LW.
