I still think he could be closeted.
[Read the article: Closing the doors on single-sex education?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Anon, maybe you're right, but for me, what still doesn't make sense is his admiration for CAmille Paglia. From what I understand, one of the sypmtoms of closeted or unrealized homosexuality in men is saying something like "yeah, of course i'm stragiht. the only women i want is Amy [the most popular girl in schools]," in other words, setting an unattainable goal so you never actually have to have a heterosexual relationship or sex. For Brightstar, even tough he's admitted he's overweight, he's always talking about how he wants pretty girls, which could already be viewed as unattainable, and then, out of nowhere, he comes out and says one day, "The only woman i want is camille paglia" who, aside from being famous and pretty much annatainable just because of that, is also GAY GAY GAY, which makes her unattaible, by definition. So, it's one of the strongest manifestations of the unattainable phenonmenon that i've ever seen. how do you explain that?
I think you're wrong that gay men don't care aboiut what women think. Gay men who have not realized they are gay do care.

Domestic terrorism on a constitutional right
[Read the article: Alabama clinics face doctor shortage]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]One of our most treasured constitutional rights is being assaulted, with terrorist means, yet it seems the Bush administration doesn't want to prosecute these terrorists.
I wonder why...

So ignorant, yet again
[Read the article: Come to Jesus]

Why'd the Pope do it?
[Read the article: Back to the Dark Ages]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Because he's an asshole.
Seriously. NPR's Sylvia Pajoli reported yesterday that Vatican scholars agree that he can't just play innocent-stupid now, that he knew what he was doing, and he was at least somewhat aware that his comments could and would provoke outrage. He's not a nice guy, people. He's conniving, he's strategic, what he's trying to do is appeal to non-Muslim europeans who feel assaulted by their Muslim populations, and bring them back to the church. And that's an asshole thing to do for a pope - to appeal to people's prejudices, fears and ignorance to bring them to the church. But, for most organized religions, it's nothing new, right? :)

Oh excuse me Golden Boy
[Read the article: Back to the Dark Ages]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I was mistaken. I had no idea that Salon Letters were actually an academic journal requiring all seriousness, politesse, citations, and nothing flip or casual. *eye roll*

Pat Robertson
[Read the article: Payback is a blast!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]recently advocated killing Chavez. Crazy fundies in this country advocate killing people they disagree with, and they even do sometimes. Pete Hill killed an abortion doctor, Matthew Shepard was killed in Wyoming for being gay, lynchings still happen in the south.

The Old Testament
[Read the article: Back to the Dark Ages]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Golden boy, this one is especially for you.
Christians, why do you always only focus on the New Testament? Yes, Jesus was a great guy, with a lot of wonderful ideas, but, don't forget, the old testament is part of your sacred scripture as well. So for all those who love to quote scary quotes from the Koran, i gotta tell you, the old testament, that little old ditty, has some great zingers, worthy of any al-qaid tract. Observe:
Deuteronomy 21:18 "If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, 19 his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. 20 They shall say to the elders, "This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard." 21 Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid."
22:5 A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor a man wear women's clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this.
22:20 If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the girl's virginity can be found, 21 she shall be brought to the door of her father's house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father's house. You must purge the evil from among you.
22:22 If a man is found sleeping with another man's wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel.
13:6 If your very own brother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you love, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, "Let us go and worship other gods" (gods that neither you nor your fathers have known, 7 gods of the peoples around you, whether near or far, from one end of the land to the other), 8 do not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity. Do not spare him or shield him. 9 You must certainly put him to death. Your hand must be the first in putting him to death, and then the hands of all the people. 10 Stone him to death, because he tried to turn you away from the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
And so on. What was that Jesus taught, something about being the first to cast a stone?

Oh, almost forgot, the most important one:
[Read the article: Back to the Dark Ages]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Deuteronomy 12:32
"See that you do all I command you; do not add to it or take away from it."
