Homework comes in many different flavors
[Read the article: Building a hate for learning]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Yes, i agree that unti late elementary school, homework should be kept to an absolute minimum. But i'm sorry people, when you're reading Hamlet & the legend of king arthur and learning geometry or calculus or chemisty (this is mostly high school materials), you're gonna have to study outside of class, like you would in college.
AP classes replace college classes, so they require as much time as a college class would, which means a lot of extra studying. Now, i'm not defending the Roman Aqueduct Cake, but i think that studying is very often appropriate.
. At the time, I was doing assignments for parenting magazines about how to get your kids to knuckle down and do homework.
Uh, yeah, guess what, studying, in college too, can very often be boring. College level Bio, or Linear Algebra or Intl Macroeconomics or even frickin French Lit can sometimes be very very boring, but you're just gonna have to do it.
Now, it has been proven that there is zero correlation between kids' academic achievement and the economy.
I also take issue with this assertion -- how can there not be? If there isn't, why not just stop having school altogether?

Yes, children are people, but adults are people too.

[Read more letters about this article: Here]Yeah, because having children is your choice. what if i said, i choose to buy realy expensive gourmet food, so all of you need to put gourmet food first? LeCastor
Aside from the problems with English, it amazes me that this argument is actually advanced. Hobbies are a choice. Today, parenting is a choice. There the similarity ends. Because children are PEOPLE. Reproduction and child rearing are NECESSARY to the rudimentary functioning of society. I'm not talking about other people's children paying social security vs. childless paying real estate tax, I feel that it probably evens out. As we age, we will all need new bodies to do the business of society. Where are these people going to come from?
"problems with English"? I really didn't know I had any, but, if i do, attribute it to English not being my first language. First, let's get out of the way the argument that we should all support other people's children because we need children to continue our society. I don't think this country is in any danger of not having enough people, and i already support other people's children through the taxes that i pay. i really would like it to end there. But more importantly, "'hobbies are a choice" but "children are people." Yes, children are people, but so are adults, and all i'm saying is, let's treat other people's children the say way we treat other adults, which is, with equality and a balance. Why is it that people think that their children's existence should dictate, in part, how i live my life, but not vice versa? I don't try to ban mac & cheese from the grocery store, or children from the subway, and the wiggles, and in return, i ask that you not try to ban all the adult things that i love. Live and let live. That's all.
It's like when people say, "we should have less smut on tv." Why? "For the children." It's a perfectly acceptable things to say, but what if i said, "we should have more smut on tv." why? "for the adults." you would think i'm crazy. now, the "decency" people have won the battle for the TV (their babysitter) -- TV is so sanitized and stupid that i don't even own one anymore, but i would feel alot better if the decency and "what about the children!" crowd would not be trying to control even more of my life.

Screw that, let's all have babies
[Read the article: Why the barista can't breast-feed]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]YIKES
As a person who has no children and has no plans to have children I must say that I am appalled at the misanthropic views taken by many of the childless people on this subject. I can't believe anyone would ever equate a hobby with a human being. Or a pet, for that matter. Has civiliations broken down to the point where people feel smugly justified in equating raising the future generation with collecting stamps? What cracks me up most is that these people are mad at people taking time off to take care of their kids, but then going on about how THIER lives suffer and how THEY deserve to go home and take a nap or grace society with their socially relevant painting. Seriously. No wonder we get the selfish stereotype. Jesus. With liberals like these, who needs republicans?

You're right, it would have been much better if Michelangelo just had a bunch of children and worked as a fighmonger or stonecutter, instead of creating his "scoially relevant painting." You know, Quentin Tarnatino, Bill Maher, Condi Rice, Supreme Court Justice Murphy, they can all just shove it, i can't believe that they would value their life's work higher than having children. Let's all just have a few, and talk about diaper genies nad the PTA. that's all we really need.
