I find I must agree with Ms. Coulter about war, and think it goes to the heart of why war should always be the last resort of civilized people, and makes about a strong a case as possible for why our republic should never involve herself in wars of choice.
And somehow, this all leads Coulter to the conclusion that "If you want a shorter rebuilding process, then we're going to have to wage less humane wars. The enemy -- as well as innocent civilians -- must be bombed into quivering terror."
To paraphrase General Sherman -- war is indeed terrible, so let us endevour to make it as terrible as possible, that it may be as brief as possible. From this truth I draw the exactly the opposite conclusion than is drawn by Ms. Coulter and her ilk. I agree that if we are to engage in war, we must follow Sherman's advice, must make that war was terrible as we ever can. Half measures in warfare are always counterproductive, always create more enemies than they destroy. The idea of conducting a 'humane' war is the biggest oxymoron ever foisted on us by our military-political establishment. War is horror, and can never be anything else -- those who attempt to use war as a tool of statecraft are criminals. Starting a war is the greatest crime against humanity of all, and if there is any justice in the world, then the men and women of this administration will someday face a jury of their peers to answer for their crimes.
Several years ago, screeners confiscated a tiny wrench that was on my keychain, which I used to tune my drum head. It was about 3 inches long -- about the most inoffensive item you could imagine.
'No tools.'
'Come on, it isn't a hammer, it's just a tiny wrench. It's a KEY CHAIN for christsakes.'
'No tools.'
'What possible neferious use could I put this to? Am I going to disassemble the plane in midair with one 1/2" wrench?'
Suspicious look.
'No tools.'
You said,
"By contrast, a plurality of respondents -- 55 percent -- disapprove of Republican congressional leaders."
As far as I know, 55 percent is a majority. Hooray for the majority!
