Shaved heads? numbers instead of names? Sounds like the George Lucas film "THX1138". It also somewhat reminds me of Ira Levin's underappreciated novel "This Perfect Day" where the populace is kept drugged to maintain a neutral emotional state and sex is no more important that brushing your teeth.

  • I am shocked! Shocked!

Another story proving what anyone with a brain had probably already figured. When Bush, et al, started talking about Iraq and WMDs, the need to take action, etc., I made two predictions to friends and family:

    1. We were going to invade Iraq, regardless of WMD findings.

    2. It would be a fiasco.

Although I'm not the Oracle at Delphi, I'll say that I am two for two on this. Still, we're in a bit of an echo chamber here. Salon readers aren't the ones who need to read this article - it's the people who get news from other sources that say we need to defeat the "bad guys."

  • From the Ashes...

I've always been intrigued by what happens to the band mates after a great or near great artist dies too young. From the ashes of Joy Division came the seminal new wave band New Order. From the ashes of Nirvana arose the Foo Fighters. On the other, consider the death of Jim Morrison. Ray Manzarek, et al, didn't really make a splash after that.

  • Predictable

This outcome is so commonplace, it's maddening that individual men and women are not better equipped to handle it. My marriage is a victim of similar circumstances. As I pick up the pieces and move forward, I discovered a very insightful book that, as I read, I keep thinking "If only I'd known this before..." That book is 'How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It: Finding Love Beyond Words' by Patricia Love. That's certainly an ironic name for the author but the book is eye-opening. As it turns out, more talking is the _last_ thing men and women need to be doing.

  • A Third Way

You've already seen it next to the toilet paper: Charmin Freshmates. They're basically diaper wipes for adults. Perhaps not as good as a bidet, but far superior to dry toilet paper.
