This will be Obama's legacy: going from beloved to reviled in under a year. He is in the process of blowing an election that should have been a sure thing. Mark my words: by the time President McCain is being sworn in, it will be widely understood that the nomination of Obama was the worst blunder in American political history. He's not going to win, people. You know it and I know it.
I'm not sure the country can take another four years of GOP rule. Obama is the only thing standing between the GOP and the White House, and he's letting us down. He'll be remembered as a villain, as the man who made it possible for the Right to continue its assault on the American people and the rest of the world.
...I doubt John McCain will appoint him. Obama needs help and fast, and it's going to take someone with star power on the ticket to do it. Webb would have worked, but he's out of the running. The only remaining possibilities are Hillary Clinton and John Edwards.
To those pining for General Clark, you can forget that right now. Obama for whatever reason wants to distance himself from Clark, and if Clark is the VP pick you can be assured that we will be hearing about Clark's comments regarding McCain getting shot down from here to November. Plus, I don't imagine that Clark is feeling too warmly towards Obama after being thrown under the bus like that.
Technically he's not the nominee yet. I'd like to see someone, anyone - Clinton, Edwards, Gore - lead a fight to displace him at the convention.
We have been the victim of a vicious BAIT AND SWITCH and I want my money back.

Let's face it:
1. McCain's choice for running mate has a greater than usual potential for being a highly consequential decision. Which is to say, given McCain's age and health, there's a real possibility of him not making it through his term. So his running mate might well end up being president before too long.
2. Romney is the least bad choice available to McCain. Which is to say: if we had to have a GOP president, Romney is probably the least objectionable.
So:
McCain/Romney '08!
Are you people completely out of your minds?
Guess what - men like naked women! The sight of a naked woman makes them sexually aroused!
To publish her pretentious, poorly-written B.S. next to writers like King Kaufman, who actually have something interesting to say, is an incredible insult. Salon should fire this poor excuse for a writer and then fire whoever hired her.
What was with that shout-out to our War-Criminal-in-Chief after winning the gold?
What on earth made them think anybody wanted to hear about their politics? The only reason you are even on tv is because people want to look at your ass.
Surely King has something to say about baseball's historic first use of instant replay!
KK writes:
" If the average offense facing the average defense has a 50 percent chance of success, what are your chances with a good offense against a bad defense? And what if it's the end of a long afternoon, and that defense has just been on the field getting scored on?"
The relative quality of the teams obviously affects the odds, but the other two factors - whether it is the end of the game, and the fact that the defense has just been scored on - will not affect the odds.
Because the baseline success rate, whatever it is, already factors those things in. If you are going for a 2-pt conversion, then the defense will have just been scored upon in the vast majority of cases. (Relatively few touchdowns are scored off of interceptions, kickoffs, etc.)
And I would venture to guess that the majority of conversion attempts come late in the game. Nobody goes for two in the first half.
At first this move seemed insane, but I guess if you really become convinced that your manager is shitty, it doesn't necessarily make sense to keep him just because there are only 12 games left. If you are going to the playoffs, you want to give yourself the best chance to win, and if that means a different manager, then so be it.
Probably would have been better for everyone if they had realized it before the season though.
Right now the odds of making the conversion may be less than 50%, but there's no reason that number has to stay there. If a team decided that they were going to go for two after every touchdown, they would presumably invest a lot more time into figuring out and practicing to put the ball in the end zone from the two yard line. With some time and practice you might be able to drive that percentage higher than 50%, at which point you should never go for an extra point again, unless it is tied late in the game.
