Academic DFH Flashback for LMW
[Read the article: John Yoo's war crimes]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]During the SFSU riots, I happened to be a TA at the then most prestigious UC campus, UCSC. Thus at that precise time I was teaching One-Dimensional Man to Wynn Hayakawa, S.I.’s daughter. She told me, “I like to think I take after my mother.”
The course I was teaching was designed to be kind of a glorification of the Cultural Revolution in China (which, of course and very fortunately, we knew almost nothing about). But for my section I expanded the reading list to include all things DFH. Thus, in addition to the obligatory Little Red Book and the aforementioned Marcuse, we had Revolution for the Hell of It, Soul on Ice, Autobiography of Malcolm X, Teachings of Don Juan, Electric Acid Kool-Aid Test, and R. Crumb’s Carload O’ Comix.
Early on, we read the Tom Wolfe and after that a couple of wise guys in the class brought in a pitcher of kool-aid to each session which I would have to drink the first glass of before class began. In honor of my sang-froid in the face of potential trip-out, these guys awarded me at term’s end with a beautiful Marine Corp jacket. I wore it proudly until I ran into some Ex-Marine Alameda County Sheriffs’ Deputies at a subsequent political riot on the Berkeley campus. Something about the buttons…

[Read more letters about this article: Here]I came to UCSC in Fall '67 as the original Hist. Con. student. The program was phony, nothing was happening. Then, we got word NOB was coming next Fall. I was a Life Against Death devotee. He heard I was anxiously awaiting him and when he came said to me, "So I hear you're crazy, too." Unfortunately, NOB did not turn out to be a fun teacher. He didn't care for the paper I wrote for the reading course I took with him comparing him unfavorably with Schopenhauer. He had moved beyond Life Against Death (to Love's Body). I still have the poem he wrote at the end of my paper: "You are stuck in a rut, you are, you are..." He kicked me out of school (but I came back). I am proud to have been kicked out of school by Norman O. Brown.

Matzoballs
[Read the article: Bill Kristol, great man of sacrifice, on the duties of Passover]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Just got back from Seder in LA where greatest controversy was over preference for hard or soft matzoballs in the chicken soup. Read the post and the letters and can say that Glenn has the largest matzoballs around. Bet he prefers hard, too.

It must be said again...
[Read the article: John McCain's serious foreign policy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]McCain believes he's Hamas' worst nightmare, but remember Tom Tomorrow - there's basic ass and hole-in-the-ground confusion here. McCain is actually Hamas' fondest wet dream. They need an uncompromising Israel/USA position to continue to be relevant.
The real question is did they say nice things about Obama so McCain would be more likely to be elected? Those diabolical A-rabs!

[Read more letters about this article: Here]You know that someone here knows all about Shuman. Shuman The Human's Night Of Terror appears immediately before Big Fine Legs, Anal Antics, and Once I Led The Life Of A Millionaire, all featuring Mr. Snoid in my '68 teaching text, R.Crumb's Carload O'Cimics. Remember?

[Read more letters about this article: Here]Well, hope is in the air.
As we used to sing:
The people in the streets were dancing round and round,
And swords and guns and unicorns were scattered on the ground.

[Read the article: Neocons and the truth: Bitter enemies to the end]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]So you believe in some variation of the Bernard Lewis theory that if the Iranians had nuclear weapons, MAD would not affect them because they (unlike every other people and government in the world) simply do not care if they live or die. No, this country, which has not attacked anyone in hundreds of years, would immediately attack Israel and be itself “obliterated” (by the Israelis, if not by the US or Hilary Clinton herself). This is your opinion, right? And you see this opinion as based on some kind of honest “mistrust” of Iran rather than self-serving interests of pro-Zionists who wish to get their perceived enemies in Iran attacked.
OK. So far so good. But you’re bringing this here where the concept of the “chickenhawk” has been thoroughly discussed. Surely, NOB, you believe that as a result of this logic Israel should attack Iran right away. You don’t think that we should do their dirty work for them, do you? Israel has one of the most powerful military establishments in the world. What for? Surely not just to blanket South Lebanon with cluster bombs. So please take this idea where it belongs – back to the Israelis. Or do think they might have a might bit more “realistic” foreign policy than we do?
