Two reasons really. Even though the show has been on the air for three years, the amount of time that has actually passed on the island is only about 90 days. (See Lost timeline at http://www.lostpedia.com/wiki/Timeline) Secondly, the castaways have a full supply of Dharma Initiative rations from the hatch and a supply drop that they found in the jungle.

  • No Finale Wrap-ups???

[Read the article: Finale wrap-up: "Veronica Mars"]

Didn't know where else to post this letter since the articles I'd like to comment on don't exist. The two best season finales of the year have been "The Office" and "Lost". For some reason salon.com has chosen not to publish finale wrap-ups for these shows??? I know we just got treated to a "Lost" article yesterday but after seeing last night's amazing finale I was really looking forward to reading some insightful commentary from one of the the fine writers at salon.com...

  • Things to drop instead of Audiofile

    1. The Joan Walsh blog. Does anyone actually read this!??!!?

    2. Video Dog. Love Heather Havrilesky's TV column, but this feature sucks.

    3. Glenn Greenwald. Maybe it is just his smarmy looking caricature or how much he must love his own words to post so damn much, but whatever it is I cannot bring myself to read this blog.

    4. Since you asked. I think the letters are interesting and I even think I like Cary Tennis and what he seems to believe in, but he has got to be the worst advice giver in history. So many non-answers...

    5. Farhad Manjoo. I like the technology features but wish they were written by someone more knowledgable than Manjoo.

    6. Ask the Pilot??!!? Let me get this straight, no more audiofile but we will still get to learn about what goes on behind the scenes in the airline industry? This was interesting a few times, not in weekly doses.

How I wish I had not just renewed my subscription to Salon.

  • Editor's Choice

Seems to me that the editor has not really chosen to highlight the letters on this topic that most sharply criticize the direction that Salon has been heading. There are nearly 200 posts about this topic and merely one page of Editor's Choice comments, none of which are very critical of Salon in general. The active letters section on the home page does not list this topic in the top 5 even though this has the third highest number of comments. Clearly what is important to the subscribers is not of very much importance to the editors. I have been a paid subscriber to Salon since the Premium service was introduced. I have given subscriptions to friends as gifts and talked up the features I love to anyone who would listen. I will no longer do this and plan to let my subscription lapse. Come to think of it, I would really like to cancel immediately and get a refund for the remaining time left on my subscription considering that I will not be getting what I paid for.

  • Loyal Subscribers Not Wanted

I certainly agree that it seems to be Walsh's goal to alienate subscribers. Have a look at the annual report (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/sec?s=slnm.ob) and it pretty blatantly spells out that this is the case. There is more money to be made from ad revenue than the subscribers who have stuck with Salon from the beginning. Salon is basically bleeding money and seems to be acting out of desperation to appeal to the lowest common denominator of casual web-surfers who happen upon the site and view the ads for a site pass. I guess they are just trying to save their business from totally going under but this is being done at the expense of what made Salon worthwhile in the first place. Please refund my money. If there happens to be anything on Salon worth checking out in the future (if indeed Salon has a future) I'll just ignore the ads like everyone else and get a day site pass.

  • probably you can soon also skip the vmcnetflix add-in for Windows Media Center

...if all the hype is to be believed that Netflix will be bringing it's Watch It Now service directly to the Xbox 360. Seems like a smart way to get the service to all the people that already own this console.
