  • Re: Condoms ruining sex

[Read the article: So, a pig walks into a bar ...]

"if women had to wear something that removed most of the sensation the human race would be extinct. The fact that any man is even interested in having sex wearing a condom is proof positive that there is no equivalence between the male and female sex drive. --Anonymous"

I'm not so sure about that. Personally speaking, condom-wearing men seem to complete the deed with what appears to be little suffering. Not that I'm the perfect incarnation of Aphrodite (ahem) but they can't cut down on sensation THAT much.

Especially if you put a bit of lube in the tip. Not too much though, you don't it flying off in a moment of passionate aerobics.

Besides, the premise you have there doesn't really work. Women have no need to have an orgasm to get pregnant, though orgasming does increase the chances of successful fertilization... The odds of a woman having an orgasm from just straight penis/vagina sex alone are pretty low. Yet women persist in aiding population growth ;)

  • Europe vs. the USA in unplanned pregnancies & abortions

[Read the article: So, a pig walks into a bar ...]

"Theories anyone about why the US has higer unplanned pregnancy and abortion rates than Western Europe? -- nancyh"

I think it's because the USA is all screwed up about sexuality.

We use sex to push almost everything in ads, spend tons of money on porn, but we have almost zero Hollywood movies with full nudity of both sexes, anything wavering close to kinky gets a NC17 rating, while insane violence gets a R rating... these are just minor bits though, the real issue is that the open teaching about birth control is VERY repressed.

I mean, just look at this article -- 2 major TV stations refused to air a condom ad! Many government administrations (and schools) have refused to fund BC education. The obvious result is unplanned pregnancies and after-the-fact birth control through abortion. Friggin' STUPID and SAD. Don't even get me started on how difficult it is to get an abortion in some areas of the US.

  • Nice fantasy

    It sure is :)

I don't want to get down and dirty hammering the pro-life people, but suffice it to say that through sitting in harsh judgement on all sexual education, they are pushing the numbers of abortions up, not down.

I mean, I am definitely pro-choice, and at one point in my 20s, I thought I would require one... and I always thought it was an ethically simple procedure that I would have no problem getting, but I started to be awed by the power of that "easy" solution.

I support the right to choose 100%, but geez, why oh why can't classrooms/clinics/families start at Point Zero with education first, and head the worse possibilities off at the pass?

Too bad the conservative thinkers do not follow their favored path all the way to the end of reality.

Just wanted to say that I loved the use of the red & purple empty newspaper boxes to stand as faux toner cartridges.

    Inspired really.

  • I think we should annoint a PARIS Day... whadaya say?

Maybe Salon could interview her... get her thoughts on all those top tabs: A&E, Books, Comics, Community, Life, Movies, News & Politics, Opinion, Sports and Tech & Business.

We could have her pen a 3-sentence paragraph on each tab, "Thoughts from Paris on [topic]". We wouldn't want to tax the poor girl too much. Maybe a shot of Paris thoughtfully chewing on a pencil as an accent graphic.

Then maybe some deep analysis from the Salon staff? Something along the lines of how her thoughts and lifestyle represent all that is addictive, distracting, hollow and subliminal in our culture?

Eh? Come on! Who's with me? Let's show some Paris love!

    You get my red star.

Who I REALLY feel betrayed by is the Democrats, not Bush et al. I mean, come on, is anyone really shocked they continue to behave like scumballs?

Like the fable of The Scorpion and the Frog, Bush is the Scorpion. It is his nature to be weak, criminal, conniving.

I celebrated when the Democrats won the House & the Senate, but what good are they doing as they roll over, again and again? What are they so afraid of?

If only bravery and moral convictions were more common in politics...

Very odd how that as-of-now number of letters written in response doesn't rank in at number 2 in the current list. Or at all.

And how the link to the announcement by Joan dropped off the front page under Friday the 13th.

Must be an unlucky #13 thing. Mmmhmm.

I find it amusing that a current headline in the War Room is "The disappearing protests."

  • Wow.

Huh. Didn't expect Salon to jump on the sleazy ship of the Leaked Potter. Nice work, Farhad.

And zowie, some of the fans using txt-msg-spk for railing against the spoilers, and the one who can't figure out how to get the download (!!!! more exclamation points will surely help you in your plea !!!!)... I would have thought after plowing through all the previous Potter books, their grammar would be a bit more coherent.

(What, you're serious, you say? Why yea Gods! Quickly, to the tech manual for the Internets! All will be revealed to you... but first, bring some Coke and Kung Pow Chicken, then we can talk. Don't forget your binder for the handouts.)

Yeesh. They're a nation of smart, passionate people, who have been fighting bloody on their own for decades.

Maybe without us standing guard with aid at the ready, they'd hammer out some peace a bit faster with their neighbors.
