Canuckistan Bob, I totally sympathize with you. I actually stopped posting a while back and the reason being that Salon doesn't moderate their threads very well, so trolls end up overtaking the place. I don't expect to see any intelligence here because first of all, who in their right mind is going to want to contribute when half these comments are nonsensical, mean spirited asshattery.

As you've probably noticed, trolling on feminist and women's sites are among the worst. I have my theories as to why (one of which is there's just a glut of highly uncreative douches out there who like to blame their mommies and non-existent girlfriends for all their problems in life, including their inability to attract a member of the opposite sex, and they wonder why) Give these trolls any bit of the truth and they come right back at you with even more douchery...there's just no sense in dealing with 'em. Nonetheless, the trolls here are well known among the blogosphere, and Salon is complicit in this for failing to police the threads, thus you end up with the type of conversation you see here and on most BS posts: very few serious posters with well thoughtout responses, too much trollery with all the typical troll cards being played i.e. intentionally inflammatory posts, derailment of conversation, ad hominem attacks, circular logic, no logic at all, etc. I don't have any expectation that the trolls will stop or go away, because they get off on destroying good conversation, furthermore, when you try to point out that their trolling is childish and immature they will respond with little more than "your momma smells". They don't give a damn, so what's the point? Anyway, many people have stopped posting on Salon because of the poor quality in comments. (Actually, I feel bad for the few people left who in good faith post thoughtful responses despite the low quality of other comments on this site.)

Only when Salon increases the moderation on it's threads will more sensible serious intelligent commenters return. Until then I expect nothing from posters here and the trolling will continue. Sad, but what can any of the serious commenters really do? Got any ideas Bob?

(I told myself that I would stop reading these comments, but for some reason I clicked on this thread, just out of curiosity, to see if anything had improved. You can guess the answer to that question)

  • what some people don't realize about the police state

[Read the article: Massive police raids on suspected protesters in Minneapolis]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I was reading article on this issue in some of the local newspapers and I couldn't believe some (most) of the comments left there. Here's a sampling:

"The people of Minnesota should not let the rule of law get in the way of national security. If President Bush wants to arrest protesters because they might be terrorists then who are we to disagree with his judgment? Lock them up for a while until they learn to shut up."

"All this yapping about the "loss of our civil liberties" is nothing but mindless, ignorant babble from the lips of tin-foil hat wearing loons."

"If you support any type of action like this, you are a terrorist. Pure and simple." (referring to the protesters)

"These terrorists have no right to disrupt the important business at the Republican convention...There should be a rule against speaking out against the true patriots like McCain and Bush. In a time of war, it only hurts morale."

"I don't WORRY about the police coming to my door and raiding my house, for one simple reason - I don't do anything illegal. If I was a moron and collected buckets of urine, and opened my mouth constantly about how I was going to be destructive, then yes - I might be worried..But since I abide by the laws of the land - I don't worry about being raided."

"All you need to do is look at these people and listen to what they are trying to say and you'll realize how misguided and stupid they really are. I hope the police execute them one by one and throw them in a ditch, haha."

"I love seeing these people in handcuffs and leg restraints"

I think that the attitude of most of these people scares me as much as the raids themselves. Sometimes I wish these people would just move to communist China or the Middle East if they so badly want to live under authoritarian rule. Seriously, these people scare the shit out of me.

Shooter, you do realize, that by your logic, the cops would have to raid all those fundie Christian groups who advocate Armageddon and the end of the world. So is your suggestion to raid all their churches, seize all their property and charge them with conspiracy?

Apparently you did not bother to read the link that Glen posted. Whether you want to believe it or not just "advocating violence" is not reason enough to be arrested. Just because you want to believe something is true, doesn't necessarily mean that it is true. In this case you happen to be dead wrong.
