Post-partum depression
[Read the article: Pretty baby]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]After giving birth to my third child I went crazy with depression. Panic attacks, shortness of breath, an overpowering feeling of wanting to "throw the baby away." We lived in an apartment with terraces, and I could not walk out on the terrace with her in my arms. I was afraid of what I might do. Post-partum depression, which I was experiencing, was not recognized 38 years ago when I had it. And I had not felt it with my first two.
Finally, after a year of hell, and a very helpful, understanding husband, I came out of it and went on to have three more happy, healthy pregnancies and births.I have six grown children now, but I will never forget when the only thing the doctor could say was, "it's hormones!" We've come a long way, baby.

no to all circumcison
[Read the article: Sierra Leone's "top" female circumcisers lay down their weapons]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I would hope that all circumcision, of males as well as females, be abolished. Genital mutilation of both sexes, whether presribed by religion or ritual, is still mutilation. I am always surprised at people who are aghast at female circumcison and complacent and complicit in the wholesale slaughter of infant foreskins. What a strange world this is!

I wish you well!
[Read the article: Streams of consciousness]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I liked your article and was very interested in your condition and treatment.
It is just the expression "pee your pants" that is driving this '50's Ivy League grad CRAZY! We pee'ed IN our pants and sometimes pooped in them, but this NEW language is, oh well, I COULDN'T CARE LESS! Does anybody out there remember?

If the child does not stop voluntarily, see a doctor!
[Read the article: The breast of times]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]As the mother of six,all breast-fed, all different, all individual, all grown-up and independent, I cannot imagine holding a four year old to my breast. The child would not allow it, would be perplexed, would be too busy, would rather have a lollipop! I was perfectly willing to breastfeed indefinitely, but my children were all large, required solid food, sat at the table with us from an early age, wanted what the others were having, and did not want to lie, dangling, across my non-capacious lap. They WANTED desperately to join the grownups!
As I see it, that is the issue. This child does not seem to be following a normal developmental process, and that would concern me as a mother. This woman NEEDS another baby. That is the normal scheme of things.

what is genital mutilation?
[Read the article: The unkindest cut]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]What disturbs me most is the number of hypocrits who condemn female genital mutilation and condone mutilation for males. I do not care what religion they practice! It comes to the same thing. An innocent healthy child is pinned down and mutilated. Is this in God's image? What is the rationale? Has not religion itself changed over the ages? Are Jews really allowed to be "reform" or "conservative"? Can priests be gay? Can women be rabbis? Change happens and when a little baby boy is born we continue to question the efficacy of circumcision. Let's rather pull out the roots of all the teeth that later are going to cause so much bother coming in, falling out and then coming in again and decaying. Cut out teeth!

little bird
[Read the article: When is a "Little Bird" not a little bird?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Little bird, in Arabic, is often a euphemism for "penis"--it does not refer to female purity as much as it refers to the young male. Another example of cultural clashes due to lack of understanding.

doggie dirt
[Read the article: Bored? Lonely? Take a walk]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I love Garrison Keillor and I walk the same paths every day. The only criticism I have would be his failure to criticize the wretched disregard of the dog walkers/lovers for the aesthetic concerns of us ordinary dog-less walkers, people who have to sidestep the streams of urine and traces of loose feces on the sidewalk. I often feel like saying, in a friendly fashion, "why don't you let your animals despoil your home instead?" After all, taking a walk should be a positive experience for all.

my hero
[Read the article: A hit job on Keith Olbermann]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Keith Olbermann is my hero! He is the one good reason to watch any TV news program. I watch him and tremble for him! He is the one "truthteller" and I will not be surprised if someone tries to silence him.
On the matter of debate questions for the "holier-than-thou" wannabe Republican candidates, why has no one ever asked them what they would advocate if one of their daughters or granddaughters were pregnant, at a tender age, by a rapist. Should abortion be legal? What a simple, straightforward question. Has it ever been asked?

Yes!
[Read the article: Chris Matthews gets it wrong -- again]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Funny, I, too, want to like Chris Matthews! I don't know why, really, except that he "seems" so sincere. But, after watching the last show, I was appalled at the level of discourse, the idiocy of the panelists, the reaffirmation of the Warren Report. I thought we had, at least re: the Kennedy conspiracy, accepted the obvious and learned to live with it. Now I know it is hopeless and truth will not out.
