Filthy, sullen, dangerous?.. gotta be Detroit DTW

Sure they added a mile long terminal for Northworst, named after a man whose level of corruption and cronyism would have made him feel right at home in Chicago or Africa. But if you're flying anything other than Northworst.. welcome to the third world right in the heartland of America.

I pulled up to wait for a friend to arrive and a Wayne County sheriff deputy drove up and told me to move my car.. I responded that my pickup would be here shortly and the deputy popped the snap on his holster. I moved. this was pre 9-11. I suppose a $20 would have sent him on his way.

Easily the worst airport in the 'civilized' world.

A Rod vs. Jeter

i'm no fan of the Yankees but to suggest Jeter is a 'much lesser' player than A-rod is ridiculous.

Are we talking regular season vs. playoffs? Are we talking big games against the Red Sox or beating up on the Deviled eggs? if you had runners on and two outs.. who would you rather face.. Jeter or A Rod? Did you see A rod vs. the Indians this year?... laughable.. one solo home run I think. Did you see A rod vs. the Tigers last year? pathetic!!!!!!!

To pound the Royals or Deviled Eggs into submission is one thing.. to play a BIG game vs. the Red Sox or the playoffs... I'll bet A rod wasn't 5 for 25 in the playoffs the last two years.

Jeter's a much better big game player. NO question

As for the Tigers having Brandon Inge... he was the weak link in the Tiger's everyday line up this season... no question. A total collapse down the stretch this season. He can get hot and carry the team for a series or maybe a week.... but day to day... futility is an apt description.

Tit for tat

No one seems to remember that in the 'good old days" a Bob Gibson or a Don Drysdale or a hundred other guys like that would come WELL inside on this minor's leaguers rib cage. They didn't try to knock you down or get you off the plate, they came inside to hit you.

That's how the game was played then. No longer is that tolerated. IF you're a guy who's established and still on the hill.. you bust the guy inside. IF you're trying to make the roster.. you nail the guy and take the ejection. Show the skip you're gonna protect your guys.

what are the benefits of Olympism?

you get to see that gymnast who mashed her ankle hobble off a couple thousand times on the tube?

My take is.. the Olympic dudes have sold an even bigger pile of crap on the public than have the NCAA just substitute "amateur" for 'student-athlete'.. no small feat.. I'd give them a gold medal for hubris.

The IOC wants to sell Coke, McDonalds and Nike to 2 billion Chinese... that's not the Olympic ideal.. it's Madison Aves.

They want to BS the entire world. It appears to be working.

Andy Richter Controls the Universe

I love Hulu too.. they just need to add Andy Richter Controls the Universe. there are only 15 or so episodes.. each one a classic.

Check out all nine episodes of "the Tick" another terrific show

There is a guy out there with a company called Classics2dvd that offers pirated CDs of just about every show ever broadcast. Worth checking out if you're hot for an obscure series.

Sabermetrics vs playing the game

Sabermetrics are for guys like Bill James, George Will, that Gammons fella and other pocket protecter wearin' nerdy taped glasses kinda guys who couldn't catch VD on Rush Street in Chicago on a Friday night.

Baseball is for guys like Joe Morgan who could play the game. They needn't be concerned with stat junk because instead of reading about baseball...they were playing baseball.

I could listen to Jon Miller describe the Oscars, he's really good. Joe's okay. A little chatty.

Kirby Puckett

First off... hands down... no doubt about it... gotta be "A dying Cub fan's last request" by Steve Goodman is the finest song about living and dying as a Cub's fan. It's as magical a song as you will ever hear and the one I hope will be played at my funeral. It was sadly autobiographical but humorous as well and the world lost a great person when Steve passed on.

However, a fantastic guitar player based in St. Paul, Pat Donohue wrote a nice tribute to Kirby Puckett called "Touch 'em all" .. I'm not a Twins fan but it's a very nice effort. I don't know if you could find it online.

Big media/ market bias

if Andre Dawson had spent his ball playing days in a major media market (not when he was fading mind you.. with the Cubs) we wouldn't be having this discussion.. the guy was the best player in baseball for a time.. but he was in Montreal and no one cared.

The problem with the Hall of Fame is.. you get this big media bias too.. Jack Morris was no fan of the scribes and to pay him back.. they will keep him out.. same with Dave Kingman (who shouldn't be in anyway!)

Lee Smith in .... Bert Blyleven no.. Jack Morris in.. Dave Kingman no.. Andre Dawson in, Mark McGwire no. Alan Trammel he was a fantastic player... as a Yankee.. yes.. as a Tiger.. I don't see it happening..

Baseball great?

More than perhaps any other ball player( with the exception of Barry Bonds), Sammy most enjoyed the 'perks' of steriods.

If you can find photos of Sammy when he came up thru the Rangers and compare him to his melon head days with the Cubs.. you can see the full effects of juice.

I don't know that I've ever seen any sports icon fall from grace faster than Sammy Sosa.. he was no baseball great, he hit a lot of home runs. So did a lot of players in that era.

Minus steriods he would have been an above average ball player.
