  • Kool Kaffiyehs

[Read the article: Another reason to hate Rachael Ray]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

In the college town wehre I live, kaffiyehs stopped being the height of progressive/leftist fashion at least 10 years ago. By the way, for a square of thin cotton, they are indeed very warm, when you fold them up. I wear mine when I have to go out in heavy snow.

  • Life and death

[Read the article: Walking on air]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I do remember Philippe Petit's feat very well, and I saw him on the Tonight show soon after. I believe the sentence imposed uon him was that he had to give a free public performance of his juggling, unicycle riding, tightrope walking. His observations about life and death are very beautiful: as with any tragic end--John Lennon, JFK - we must remember that the towers' life was more than their death. I'm glad other people feel the same.

  • North Korean gymnast

[Read the article: "She was just in diapers"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I wonder if the undersized and possibly underage gymnast from North Korea was an example of the physical retardation widespread in the country due to malnutrition among children. From what I have read, 15-year-olds often look more like 11-year-olds. On the other hand, in North Korea a premier gymnast probably is better fed than the average girl.

  • Looking forward to the New York State Fair

[Read the article: Meet me at the state fair]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

...the giant butter sculpture, the mystery of spiedies solved (it's food), the horse teams, the pigs, the chickens, the Men's Garden Club showing prize dahlias, the belly dancers, the midway with the whack-a-mole and the strip show...

  • The diversity of colors at the Olympics

[Read the article: In defense of race-based rooting]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

...does make you think. When the camera showed a black woman and a white woman in the stands and the announcer identifed them as Lolo Jones' mother and sister, it took me a while to figure out which was which. And I am bemused that in each race typically six of the eight runners are black, yet represent countries like Great Britain, France, and Italy.

Remember Nellie Kim, the Korean Soviet gymnast?

  • Silver lining

[Read the article: And after the campfire singalong? Chemical peels!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Actually, learning to make do-ityourself cosmetics with ingredients found in the kitchen doesn't sound like such a bad idea, even if 10 is kind of young to start that stuff. At least if girls know how to concoct homemade foot scrubs using sugar, olive oil, and powdered ginger they might save some bucks in the future.

  • Palin

[Read the article: Nets confirm: It's Palin]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I have only dimly heard of this person - shades of Eagleton, Quayle, Bentsen (who?). But I will give the Republicans 1 point, since, if I'm not mistaken, she becomes the first female Republican vice-presidential candidate. Only 1 point to the GOP, however, for not choosing - or more likely, being turned down by - one of the many *highly* qualified Republican women out there. Susan Collins? Christie Todd Whitman?

  • dress codes cryptography

[Read the article: Dress code: Head-scratchingly casual]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Smart casual = Harvard T-shirt - no, Cal Tech T-shirt

Beach formal = suit and flip flops

the rest: ?? who are these people? and who decreed that "nobody" wears pantyhose any more?

  • Palin's responses

[Read the article: A bad night for McCain-Palin]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Every time I have seen Palin interviewed, I have thought, "*I* could give a better answer than that." For example, instead of dismissing foreign travel as something pursued by rich kids with time on their hands, how about the more truthful, "If you look on the map, Alaska is really far away from any other country, Russia and Canada aside, and for Alaskans foreign travel is very expensive and time-consuming. So the short answer is, I couldn't afford it, and then after I had children I didn't have time."

The campaign should hire me, and I've never run for anything.

  • Palin - Couric

[Read the article: Another Palin-Couric debacle]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Re. the morning after pill question, I got the impression that Couric thinks it's an abortifacient like RU-486, which it is not. (Read Broadsheet to keep up with this.) But - not being able to even name a newspaper! Surely Palin could have tossed out the name of the Anchorage daily.

  • Debate

[Read the article: Your daily Palin: Debate response edition]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

She still sounds as if she's running for head of the PTA. Where's Jeane Kirkpatrick when you need a sober-minded conservative woman? (Gone to her maker, actually.) And surely anyone who has graduated from high school should be able to correctly pronounce "nuclear", "Iraq", and "Iran"!

But Joe Biden - maybe it's last night's half bottle of wine talking, but I think I'm in love.

  • Don't assume

    [Read the article: Equal-opportunity adultery]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

...that you understand why someone strays, or even bolts, outside of marriage. I am not talking about a non-marital relationship, even though that does not excuse dishonesty. While some people may leave their spouses for another person and live happily after after, adultery is not all it's cracked up to be, and you may conclude that in comparison to the people who are taking advantage of you (or the other way around), your spouse looks pretty good because they actually care about you.

  • The Swimmer

[Read the article: Movies to avoid exit polls by]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

And it has Joan Rivers in a serious part. Really!

  • Craig and the nasty boys

[Read the article: "Quantum of Solace"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I like the fact that Craig made a point of actually reading the books while he was preparing for the role. I may be the only one here who started reading them while Ian Fleming was still alive, so IMHO the "true" Bond is somewhere between Craig and Connery.

By the way, there's this new thing called birth control, it's our secret weapon.
