  • A round of applause.

    [Read the article: Veterans Day]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Those 5 senators deserve to be utterly shamed. The Democratic Party should make sure to publicly and vehemently distance itself from such a sad display of cowardice.

I am stunned and disgusted. Hollywood conspiracy movies have nothing on the open and outright smallness that's just been displayed. These people are Liberals? hah, their affiliation makes them simply more contemptible versions their republican counterparts. I sincerely hope they all can be safely left out of office when their next elections come.

    I'm almost speechless. Unfuckingbelievable.

  • a lesson

for those who want to guarranty their ability to conceive. freeze your eggs or sperm as well as fertilized embryos.

  • don't want, or didn't have a chance to avoid?

[Read the article: Should men have to support children they father but don't want?]

the key issue here is what responsibility does a person have to be honest about their reproductive capacity.

people have been found liable (some guilty) when they have not divulged known stds. i'm not equating pregnancy to physical harm! but there is a parallel between burdens (financial or other) consequent to intercourse. so how can we encourage reproductive disclosure with potential partners. it's a tricky issue since some people are unaware, or mistaken about their own health.

i'm a man and i agree that financial responsibility should be assumed by both, you have sex you deal with consequences. that shouldn't be used to redress the lack of (or false) disclosure. unfortunately, i don't know what should.

whatever happens, when it comes to stds and pregnancy, it's sad, but you can only trust yourself and take your own precautions.

  • a small nitpick

[Read the article: I want my foie gras!]

(apologies if this has been covered, there's just too many letters to read)

i agree, it's a terrible law but i have one beef about one of the arguments bourdain uses. that it's been done since the romans would make it ok is a bit of a canard. just a few hundred years ago we could have said the same for slavery so really let's try to leave that type of argument off the, uh, table.

  • socio economics and psychology

[Read the article: The socioeconomics of orgasm]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

i'd be curious to know how these women would rate their overall stress levels and how that correlates to income and sexual satisfaction.

  • Why?

[Read the article: Letter submitted for Dodd's filibuster]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I have one question to the absent senators in the race for the office of President of the United States: why are you running?

If not to fight on issues such as this, then for what purpose? What will you struggle to change? There is an opportunity here and now to make a monumental difference whether you are elected or not. I can't imagine someone of any integrity not being aware of that and I can only question their motives.

Frankly even from a cynical, opportunist point of view I can't see taking a stand to be anything but a huge boost to any candidate. Their behavior seems not only cowardly but also pretty dumb.

Reid for his part has shown himself to be morally bankrupt. Democrats everywhere should ask for his head.

  • The Press

[Read the article: How bashing Hillary backfired]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

has been so totally and completely wrong for the past 8 years. Is it any wonder that when they say something is bad, people can't help but think it must be something good. And when they say it's the anti-christ, how can they not think 'hmm, must be competent'.

  • I wanted to contribute

[Read the article: Signs of life from House Democratic leaders]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

but since I'm Canadian I'm not eligible to donate to a PAC.

There must be many non-pac organizations that support the rule of law and civil liberties that have joined the fight against telco immunity and also accept international contributions.

If any of you have suggestions on who would be the best choice, please let me know.

Right now I'm leaning towards the EFF.

  • Depressing

[Read the article: The audacity of free trade ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I'm still waiting for a few countries to sign fair trade agreements.

Let's see what we do get: special economic zones, loans and aid with strings (chains) attached, corruption, environmental degradation, slave labour/human trafficking, bans on labour unions, no bid contracts, imposition of crippling intellectual property laws, privatization of public resources, ill-thought farm subsidies, a host of abuses and neglect of workers, and so on.

  • Rinse, repeat.

Replace 'real estate' with pretty much any topic and it still works.

Collective amnesia and misinformation, mix and serve cold.

  • Plane

    [Read the article: Ask Pablo]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Well, it could indirectly fly that plane in the future.

Boeing is working on hydrogen powered airplanes. Hydrogen could be produced with electricity from solar, wind, etc.

But, you're right, many new technologies will have to converge to solve the multitude of energy and fossil fuel related problems we face.

    [Read the article: "WALL-E"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Grave of the Fireflies (Hotaru no Haka), I think, would be the appropriate recipient of that distinction. But then again, to call it a cartoon might be to belittle a wonderful film.

For the curious, my sig links to Roger Ebert's review.

  • My brewing choice

[Read the article: Good to the last drop]

I go for the French press or the lovely Vietnamese filter that fits over a small cup. Of course, I skip the condensed milk and drink the lovely dark syrup black.
