I’m drawn to vampire fiction

When I was a teenager I was a die hard Anne Rice fan, loved Buffy and I’ve recently been drawn in by The Historian and the Sookie Stackhouse novels (these are the ones HBO’s True Blood is based on). I love Sookie – she’s like Nancy Drew, Harry and Anne Rice all rolled up into one. I’ve been considering picking up the Twilight series – but honestly it seem a little melodramatic for even me.

The reasons I like them probably are ‘tired’ and I have to admit to feeling a bit shamed by this post. Believe me – I know this isn’t great literature we’re talking about and there is a defiantly a pornographic aspect to it all. But is that really so bad?

There are vampires and then there are Vampires

I was a huge Anne Rice fan as a teen and I really enjoyed The Historian recently too. A few weeks ago I picked up the Sookie Stackhouse novels and tore through them in a week – that Sookie cracks me up and Eric just might be my favorite vampire of all time.

Over the Thanksgiving holiday I read the first two Twilight novels and there were NOT good. I’ve got the second two books sitting next to me on my desk and I’m not excited. I sort of hate Bella and Edward – Jake the Werewolf is my favorite and I think that’s mostly because I’m dying to see him kick a little vampire ass. The stuff is really written for teens and I’d compare the books to the Sweet Valley High books before I compared them to the other vampire reads I’ve enjoyed.

Basically I’m disappointed with Broadsheet. Wouldn’t it be fun, since the ladies to seem to enjoy a little vampire fiction, to be talking about it in a happy way? I like to bitch and moan as much as the next person – but I also like to chat and share and gossip and Broadsheet is not fostering that sort of community at all. Rather I feel like I ought to be defending myself against these dumb Twilight books and that’s no good.

Just Move

The letters that are insulting to the LW are obviously written by people with no experience with the Orthodox community or NYC. I mean – the LW CAN’T talk with her neighbor. His religion forbids it. If someone in his community sees him speaking to the LW it will likely be reported to his Rabbi and the Orthodox neighbor will be in trouble for engaging LW. He and his friends can shove past her but they can’t look her in the eye, speak to her or touch her. As a woman living in NYC I get how offensive it is to be marginalized and (literally) pushed around like that. And then to add to that the fear that you might have actually let a criminal into your building? It becomes scary on top of insulting.

The black man who posted saying that if it was him pushing past ladies into apartments he’d be in the back of a police car in a half a minute is dead on. And that is so unfair that it makes my blood boil! So I get why the LW is so annoyed and why so much trouble surrounds these cultural issues (Crown Heights Riots anyone?). But I do find it fascinating, given the LW’s previous frustrations with the Orthodox Community, she moved to this area in the first place. I keep hearing that rents are dropping, maybe now is the time too look around?

What if the worst did happen?

The following link will give you nightmares. If you have a weak stomach don’t click. The NYC woman in question let a man follow her into her building and this is what happened:

Here is a more recent story:

This topic isn't a joke and wanting to control who enters your apartment isn't paraoind.

Kuczynski has always read like a jerk

Have you actually read any of her previous writings on shopping and lifestyle? Obnoxious. Her book on how wonderful plastic surgery is? Gross. She’s the person all of NYC loves to hate and she has been for years and years. The only thing that’s shocking about this is that Kuczynski didn’t know she’s been being fed to the wolves this entire time.

Brave?

Fascinating yes – but not brave. I think the author of yesterday’s article just sounded scared and beat. It’s not just sex she’s given up on - she’s given up on taking chances and possibly being rejected. I don’t see how you can have any sort of real zest for life when you’re afraid like that. Sure the garden and sunshine are nice – they won’t reject you but they can’t love you back either. Even cats are only in it for the treats and belly rubs.

I think I’m about done with all these ‘over share’ articles. It’s one fad I really can’t wait to see end.
