  • Hello Kindred Spirits!

[Read the article: My childhood dreams are shattering as I approach adulthood]

I used to be fascinated with Peter Pan and imaginary creatures too. This letter got me thinking back to looking out my window for Peter Pan and the Pussy Willow that slept in an acorn top in my jewelry box.

I wonder if the LW ever had a copy of ‘Gnomes’? That’s a whole big crazy coffee table book all about how Gnomes live and what their houses look like down to the tiniest detail. Some crazy wonderful adult wrote and illustrated and imagined that. I also used to have a book all about Unicorns that was sort of the same magical world, beautifully illustrated – I think the book I’m remembering is ‘On the History and Truth of the Unicorn.’ As a teenager I let the Vampire Lestat replace Peter Pan – a much sexier way to live forever that captured my imagination in the same sort of way.

I guess my point is that some an adult wrote and imagined Peter Pan. And lots of adults have done lots of magical sorts of things along these lines. Maybe the LW is one of those creators. Or maybe the LW is like me and more of an appreciator of fancy dreams.

And remember that movie ‘The Never Ending Story’? I was obsessed. Oh, and ‘Tuck Everlasting’ was a favorite book too! I’m getting so excited remembering this old stuff. I’ve got some old books to reread and some old, friendly ideas that need to be revisited…

  • Video – what’s the point?

I can’t listen to sound at work so I never do view these videos. I’ve seen lots of readers say the same thing. So it makes me wonder - what is the point of even having a video? Was there something that she said that just couldn’t be expressed written down? Is the music that wonderful?

  • Work sucks? Blame yourself.

[Read the article: Work sucks? Blame her!]

If the politics in my office added up to some nasty lady/guy scheduling meetings for 6pm and answering emails at 4am (so they’ll look like they’re the responsible one at work) I’d walk into that person’s office and tell them they’re playing a transparent game. I would seriously call them on it and look them in the eye and wait for some sort of defense of their complete lack of time management.

And if it was the opposite situation and my co-workers were leaving at 4:59 and pushing every bit of over time at me, sans any sort of compensation, I’d put my foot down too. Seriously – what’s up with anyone that they’d put up with that? I’d head straight into my bosses office and I’d let them know what was up and why it’s unacceptable and what could be done to make the situation better. If you’ve got something in writing from HR you don’t just back down from what is yours and then passive-aggressively vow never to work for women again – that’s just what ‘they’ want you to do.

What’s the worst that happens? They tell you to get back to work or you’re fired? Whatever – I’d just go back to my desk, brush off my resume and the end result would be me at a better job.

  • Not Good

[Read the article: The best-laid plans]

I really like a nice, silly human interest story – especially if it’s about sex. But this story was poorly written and way, way too self involved.

This is the sort of thing I might expect to read in 17 Magazine and I want Salon to be better than that.

  • Why mention size at all?

[Read the article: Sweet Valley High goes on a diet]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

There is certainly a photo/picture of the perfect twins on the front cover of the book, no? And you’d just have to read a page to know that the twins are practically perfect in every way. Isn’t being slender, fit and perfect enough of a physical description? Why do they need to throw out a single size as if it’s the standard?

It’s my theory that they mentioned the size change knowing they’d get a little free PR on the blogs as people complained and discussed. I’m sure they expected readers to say, ‘but sizes have gone up’ in response to those who suggest mentioning specific perfect sizes is just another way to stress girls out.

But am I the only one who sees that some sizes have gotten smaller? Pick up your old favorite t-shirt from way back when and compare it to a new American Apparel t-shirt of the same size. Skimping on the fabric these days, no? Lots of very trendy, young clothing has gotten much, much smaller even if the sizes at Talbot’s have gone bigger. Just saying.

And also – these books were really, really bad in the 80s. Like ‘Saved by the Bell’ bad. You didn’t miss a thing.
