  • How about the odds?

[Read the article: Which Democrat is a winner?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Biden? No chance. No common touch. He connects with East Coast Democrats as a competent Senator. But he lacks all evidence of the vision to convince the public he belongs in the White House. Biden odds: .01

Kucinich? His chances are worse than Biden's; far too left wing. Plus, he is too short, too unattractive, too uncommanding a presence, to ever make the grade. Kucinich is a courageous and pugnacious legislator and could serve well as a member of a wise benefactor's government. I would love to see him take over Health and Human Services. Americans will never elect him President.

    Kucinich odds: .005

Richardson? Again, the guy lacks the personal magnetism necessary to inspire millions. I think he is more resourceful than the poor schmucks above so I'll give him a 2% but you can forget it in real life. The guy's candidacy is toast. Hope for Secretary of State, where Bill Richardson could, no kidding, fix 8 years of shit Bush has fed the world and the American People.

    Richardson odds: .02

Chris Dodd? The guy's got Lionel Barrymore's eyebrows and looks like the Hooters Owl. Maybe if he could rush into a burning orphanage and save all the babies between now and the first primaries he would get a boost but for now the Dodds are against him.

    Dodd odds: .01

Edwards? Already ran and could not bring his home state into the fold. I am disappointed with Edwards. I am not impressed by his inability to counter all the cutesy hairdo attacks from the idiot right wing. (*hint: you make them look stupid, or show them with bad hair, or make them look petty. You back-alley knife them in their fucking lying guts, politically speaking. You play dirty.)I like Edwards's ability to reason on his feet and I like his Southern touch, particularly if the Republicans pick Guiliani or Romney. He's got a shot, but he's got to win early to stay in this one.

    Edwards odds: .15

Clinton? The big favorite going in. With her background of arguing with Bill she should have eaten the others alive in every debate. Instead, she looks uneasy, lets herself fall into Drudgerous portraiture and fights a horrendous uphill battle to overcome unrealistic negative attitudes towards her. One of her biggest problems is that she lacks a real hard core nucleus of support on the left. She'll raise all the money she needs but I fear she will not inspire the real opponents of Bush and company. Maybe that will be enough and maybe it won't. The race is Hillary's to lose, however.

    Clinton odds: .40

Obama? The guy's got everything going for him. I feel bad that he is not out here in California going toe to toe with Hillary. He would eat her lunch. But in superwhite Iowa and New Hampshire he is at a disadvantage. Hillary should have creamed him in the debates with her experience at the highest levels of government, but could not do it. There is no way Obama loses to ANY Republican in the general election unless he manages to allow himself to get swiftboated out of the race over Coke and Marlboros.

    Obama odds: .35

The remaining portion of the probabilistic 1 is held back as the oddsmaker's burn card.

  • Joe Conason's favorite candidate: My Guess

[Read the article: There's no taking sides]

First of all, I don't much care whether it is Hillary or Obama. Both of them are up to the task, in my opinion. I want the one with the best chance to beat the Republicans in November to prevail, whomever that might happen to be. The Democrats simply must win. The Republicans are a fucking threat to liberty and the health of the Republic. They must be sent out to the desert to wander until they get their souls back.

Alright, Joe, here is my guess on who you would have preferred to run:

    Sen Russ Feingold, D-Wisconsin.

Am I right or AM I RIGHT!!

  • No compromise with grumpy Republicans

You need to face it; the guy's a prick. As a full-grown, female, human being, it is your right to go be in whatever play you wish to perform in without some lead weight jasper dragging down your art, man!

You need a heart to heart. Tell the guy that you decided to be in the play and that you were not comfortable talking to him about it. Tell him that this will not continue. Tell him that you were not put on this planet to walk on eggshells for anyone, especially him.

Next, take his collection of Reagan memorabilia out on the back stoop and burn it for emphasis.

  • You don't suppose Amazon could be in on this, do you?

"Sloane". The name is so Lake Foresty, almost like a Ferris Bueller joke or something. Reading the piece, I began to get this wrong idea, like the article was really an early April Fool's joke; one that would have us all rolling on the floor Wednesday when it was revealed that Sloane was really Joe Klein or Maureen Dowd, HA-HA. Or maybe Joan Walsh writing on leftover Bushmills and half a tab of Cialis.

But Holy Smokes it looks like Sloane is legit and really had a tough time finding a buck with enough hoof left to jump the fence. On behalf of horndogs and skeezbuckets everywhere I want to apologize to Sloane and assure her that there really are plenty of us out here, especially in Bakersfield and rural Kern County, CA, so long as she can see (or drink) her way past a little B.O. and the teensiest bit of mental infirmity.

  • A word on Editor's Choice picks

[Read the article: Why Clinton voters say they won't support Obama]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

This thread needs more than three.

Also, Hillary is no prize and not nearly the political talent of Obama, but I would have voted for her had she won the primary race. I will not vote for any Republican until they have utterly divorced themselves from the fundamentalists.

Good riddance to him and everyone responsible for putting the miserable little racist into the Senate.

Mourn? Hell, we ought to have a cookout!
