Wes and Greg; Keith and Jerry
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]You did not mention in your comparisons of Parker and Hernandez that Wes appeared as himself on The Brady Bunch, while still a player, and cured Greg of his crush on his teacher (whom Wes was dating), by giving Greg his glove. Hernandez, after his career, appeared on Seinfeld to "date" Jerry and Elaine. I think this puts Wes ahead of Keith.
And frankly, if Keith had kept his nose clean, then the words Neil Allen would not be cursed by me. The Cardinals apparently traded Hernandez due to the drug use and other issues. This also puts Wes ahead of Keith.
Lastly, while Wes Parker may have given up the game - Keith Hernandez gave up on his teammates in Game 6 of the 86 series, have retired to the clubhouse rather than watch the finish of the game in the dugout.
That said, Hernandez was one slick fielder.

Nolan Ryan and Tigertown
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I attended a Nolan Ryan no-hitter against Oakland. About the fourth inning, a young lady in front of me starts talking about a possible no-hitter to a young kid. She goes on and on about it. Somehow, Nolan Ryan was able to complete the no-hitter that evening.
There is a very charming movie called Tigertown "starring" Roy Scheider as an aging member of the Detroit Tigers. A young boy sneaks out and watches the game. Scheider comes alive and the Tigers win and start winning. They win the games the boy goes to. He convinces his mom that his presence at the games is absolutely crucial to the Tigers' continued success. It perfectly captures that youthful feeling that you yourself have an impact on a game you are not playing.

Fox? Hypocrits?- Let's Go to the Videotape!
[Read the article: Fox muzzles Sally Field]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It's going to be fun over the next few days as people post links to the instances where Fox airs people saying "damn" and "goddamn". I actually thought Field must have said "goddamneffing wars" only not "effing"

Up 3, Foul for 2?
[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The decision to foul when up 3 in the waning seconds of the game is debated all the time. It is not so simple as you present. When do you make the foul? You suggest the foul should have been made with 10 seconds to go. Fine. Kansas makes 2 free throws and is now down 1. Memphis inbounds and is fouled immediately. They continue to miss, so with 8 seconds, Kansas is down either 1 with a chance to win or 2 with a chance to 2 (unlikely to be down 3, given the Memphis free throw woes). I think you have to foul - if at all - with 5 seconds or less.
Then there's two nightmare scenarios: the foul is called "intentional" giving Kansas 2 shots plus the ball. Or, as contact is made, the player throws up the prayer - it goes in, plus the foul.
And as a Cal alum, you recall Leonard Taylor against USF missing the free throw, getting the rebound and scoring as time expired for the win.
Of course, you just praised Kansas and Memphis for playing straight up defense. If Memphis plays straight up defense, what is Kansas' chance of making the shot - 1 in 5? 1 in 3?
I'm sure someone has statistics on the issue which will "prove" one point of the other. But, for whatever reason, most college coaches don't foul up 3 as time runs down.
