"[Democrats] don't want to look weak on defense,"
[Read the article: Does a bigger Army mean another Iraq?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Doing things just to avoid looking weak, doesn't make you strong.
I used to wonder why, when a country was creeping towards fascism, why people didn't just stand up and say, "This is nuts".
Well, its not so easy, is it? There is a tide that just sweeps everything along, and things can be justified for the sake of national security.
Will a democratic prez go to war just because he/she doesn't want to look weak on defense?

Humorous article..
[Read the article: Our rosy future, according to Freeman Dyson]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Just goes to show that scientists are not immune from talking out of their butts.
I liked it when he said "polar bears actually like it to be warmer."
Thats probably why they go down to Florida in the winter. I read that almost half of Florida condos are owned by polar bears.
If you read carefully what Dyson said, it looks like he hasn't studied the research on global warming at all. It is not uncommon for scientists of a certain age to just sit on cruise control.
It doesn't make him a bad person, but I think he should point out that he is just giving his opinion, that he is not an expert on that subject. Because laypeople cannot distinguish between legitimate scientific results, and some old crusty guy giving his opinion.

Computer models
[Read the article: Our rosy future, according to Freeman Dyson]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I should mention also that scientists that grew up before the computer age have difficulty understanding computer modeling. It seems almost like majic, that you can prove something using a computer that you could not prove using a chalkboard.
I say this because the global warming prognosis is mostly derived from computer modeling. There is no simple equation that you can plug in and get the changes to climate from X amount of CO2 added.
The models just give us ballpark numbers, but enough to know that we have a problem.

You've got it all wrong
[Read the article: "Nazis" and "Hitler" -- the Right's casual, trivializing political insults]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]We neocons support Israel because we love the jewish people. (not the liberal self-haters, but the real jews).
We are protecting them from all the Nazis in the world.
To us, the jews are just like baby Christians. One day they will molt their immature skins and accept Jesus.
Its in the bible, Glenn. You should read it, everyone else is. Quit reading that damn constitution.

Look at Jim Webb
[Read the article: How the Democrats blew it]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]..for an example of what a democrat should be.
Most dems seem to be completely spineless. It is something to behold.
They absolutely are just as responsible as Bush and co. In fact, I probably give more respect to the republicans. At least they stuck with the program even when it wasn't going so well.
Dems vote to continue the war, and then bad-mouth the war and the prez at the same time.
Just vote republican. At least we know where they are coming from. I for one will be quite happy in a fascist state.

Give it up, Glenn
[Read the article: Angry, hateful liberal bloggers]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Why do you keep up with this?
Join our neocon agenda. Its for the best. Stop fighting the inevitable.
What are you fighting for? America?
Its already gone, son. You can't bring her back. It is only nostalgia that is keeping you now.
Just give it up. Then, your head won't hurt so much, and you'll sleep better.

Great Stuff
[Read the article: Vengeance is Brandon Mayfield's]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Most people, I think, would have taken a settlement and stopped there. This guy had the nads to go after the patriot act. (The patriot act -- the name is a joke in itself if you look at the history of the US revolution.)
And Gerry Spence rides again. That guy is down home and basic.

Bush is no Hitler
[Read the article: The latest revelations of lawbreaking, torture and extremism ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]For a country to become fascist, two things are necessary:
1) The country must be ready (or ripe) for fascism
and
2) A leader must arise who is totalitarian, charismatic, and smart.
Bush, I'm sorry to say, is not that smart and charismatic.
However, we neocons must put everything else in place, as we wait for our leader to arise. People are ready and waiting.

Important reading..
[Read the article: Stop your sobbing]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]..if only because it summarizes nicely the right-wing arguments against taking any action against global warming.
When an article seems like it comes verbatim from "The Colbert Show", ya gotta question its seriousness. Was this a prank?

Happy Feet
[Read the article: Stop your sobbing]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I think the authors watched it just before writing this piece.
I was singing "happy feet" as i read it. Because it made me feel so good inside, like after reading "the secret".

Surprising
[Read the article: John McCain's climate-change forecast]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Who would have thought that McCain's platform included a reasonable position on global warming.
He'd better quit talking about that and focus on 9/11.

A pragmatic approach
[Read the article: Proud atheists]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I believe that humankind would be better served by asking not whether religion is right or wrong, but in what ways it is useful.
Many people forget that scientific theories are also based on faith, in the sense that they depend on certain irreducible premises.
And we choose between theories based on what works best in describing our world, not on which is objectively "right" or "wrong".
That is why I no longer pray. I learned through many experiments as a child that it doesn't do a damn bit of good.
If it did, I would still be praying for stuff. But I haven't proved that God does not exist, just that he may have better things to do than listen to what people want.
I certainly hope he does.

@Steveo23
[Read the article: John McCain's climate-change forecast]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Spot on. I don't understand it either.
Notice how the green movement, and some environmental groups, can be their own worst enemy.
Its like "We want pristine utopia. Otherwise forget it".
Its enough to make me want to cancel my Sierra club membership.

The great nation that used to be
[Read the article: The man who sold the war]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]We went to war with Iraq based on the tiniest piece of unsubstantiated intelligence from an Iraqi defector, and spent hundreds of billions of dollars.
Yet we can't spend a fragment of that money to address our energy problems and global warming because "the evidence isn't in yet."
America, where have you gone?
