Speaking of weapons deals..
[Read the article: Bush's tangled arms deal]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Did you hear how the Italian police broke up a deal where Iraq was going to buy weapons w/o US knowledge?
Iraq gets gobs of weapons from the US, but they'd prefer to get them thru the Mafia. They probably trust them more.
The mafia or the US government -- who do you trust more?
I know, I know. You need some time to think about it.

You might find that it grows on you.

Typical liberal claptrap
[Read the article: Giuliani's dangerous bluster]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]How typical of the liberalistas to criticize Rudy because of the words he uses.
It doesn't matter WHAT he says. What matters is that his steadfast leadership during those dark days saved us from Islamic domination.
If it were not for him, we would all now be serving president Bin Laden, and be under islamic rule.
Which would be fine with the libs, of course. They want to be islamic slaves, that is their greatest wish.
When Rudy becomes president, I hope he changes the constitution so that liberals can't vote anymore. That would fix a lot of this country's problems.

Make no mistake, Padilla is a terrorist.

No one said it was going to be easy
[Read the article: Are Democrats really so lame?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Despite the perception, there are millions of dems who are working very hard, are dedicated and hardcore, and are no longer standing around at the water cooler whining about Bush, but are taking action.
I think people breathed a sigh of relief after the '06 election thinking, "Finally, things are going to change."
Wishful thinking.
The future of nations often rides on the razor's edge. The republicans have squandered what they were given. They exploited human weakness. Its not difficult. They took what is good in young men, loyalty, patriotism, sacrifice. And exploited it.
They took fear of terrorism, and exploited it.
What democrats must do, however, will be harder.
But the tide will turn.
We will make it turn.

The neocon delusion
[Read the article: Seizing American supremacy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Here it is in a nutshell:
Military hegemony grants superpower status.
If only it were that simple.
The U.S. will not likely be defeated by military force alone. Rather, we will defeat ourselves. We are already witnessing this slow decline. Planes and tanks are useless when starved of fuel. A military must be funded by its people; this requires a robust economy.
We should be spending this precious time making our country stronger, but we have not.
We have billions and billions of dollars to respond to the terrorist plans of one single man, Osama Bin Laden. We quake in fear of being attacked again. A few blinking boxes, adverts for a cartoon, can shut down rush hour in major cities.
We never used to be this dumb.

I did what some suggest
[Read the article: How can I love my Republican parents?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I compromised, I was empathetic, I tried to see the other's view.
For twenty years of my adult life.
My parents, of course, did not.
Now finally, I have realized that growing up means taking a stand for what you think its important.
Even if it means alienating your own parents.
If more people had done that, we would not likely be in quite this situation.
Don't feel that you should make an exception just because it is your parents. Would they do the same for you?

I think this guy is right, in principle.
[Read the article: Bjørn Lomborg feels a chill]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]In that we *should* apply a cost-benefit analysis to global warming.
This is challenging, because you must take into account future costs and benefits in the model.
However, doing so would put us quite far ahead of where we are now, which is nowhere.
Imagine, if you will, if we had applied this type of analysis to the "War on Terror".
On the one hand, we have the enormous monetary costs, hundreds of billions of dollars. Cost of lives lost, a country in ruins.
Now, add up the benefits, and prepare to be depressed.
Now, think where we'd be if we applied that effort to alternative energy sources.

Al Gore is an alarmist!
[Read the article: Bjørn Lomborg feels a chill]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I saw his movie, it was one of the most important movies I've seen.
But it was alarmist, it exaggerated some things and also made extrapolations and projections but did not identify them as such.
So what.
That does not mean that global warming is not perhaps the most important problem we face as a civilization.
Focusing on Gore's heating bill is a neocon distraction. God only knows why people fall for it.

She lives on..

Interesting..
[Read the article: Katrina, 9/11 and disaster capitalism]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The nexus between group psychology and economics is a fascinating topic.
Makes me think of something that Greenspan said in a recent interview.
Something about how he has gotten no better at predicting markets in 20 years of service, and how he believed if he better understood human psychology, he *could* predict better.

Brushes the surface
[Read the article: Mission accomplished -- for Iran]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]A good article, but it is difficult to understand Iran without delving more deeply into its history and its relationship to the US.
From our perspective, it is impossible to conceive that Iran would not be developing nuclear weapons. It is simply a matter of self-preservation.
It is also inconceivable that Ahmadinejad would come so boldly to the US and speak to Americans.
Yet, he does so.
It is impossible for us to understand that tens of thousands of Iranians marched after 911 to offer condolences. While at the same time, Iran supports organizations such as Hezbollah, which we deem a terrorist organization.
We do not understand, and it is almost impossible for us to understand, and because we are Americans, we don't care that much about understanding anyway.
I worry more about us than them. They will likely survive whatever we throw at them. We may not survive what we throw at ourselves.
