It takes one to know one, you're not one, and you proved it.
[Read the article: Is a new conservatism possible?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The end of the cold war was a disaster for conservatives? The end of the cold war was an affirmation of Ronald Reagan’s policies, which were strongly opposed by the left. It wasn’t a disaster, it is the basis of Reagan’s greatness. A greatness that conservatives will continue to point out, and leftists will try to explain away with countless (and contradictory) arguments. They’ll shoot themselves in the foot before they admit that Reagan was right, and they were wrong.
Martin Luther King as a religious leader? salonistas talking (favorably) about religion? Maybe there’s hope in the world. I like MLK’s line “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”. I like the moral absolutism in that statement. I don’t want to see it selectively applied. It’s too bad that there are so many faculty members from Duke University who don’t live by it. The same goes for countless opportunistic political operatives as well.
I hope, no, I pray, that salonistas will continue to talk about religious ideals and MLK. . . . just make sure you don’t latch onto his image, forgetting his message, as is done with the murdering thug che gueverra.
A larger percentage of Republican congressmen voted for passage of the civil rights act, than did democrats. A fact that democrats like to forget, historians rarely mention.

Wrong Already
[Read the article: Bush's old world disorder]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Usually when a left wing fearmonger like sidney blumenthal tells you how bad things are, and how bad they're gonna' get, you have to wait months or years to see that he was wrong.
Not this time. Musharraf agrees to elections;
http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2007-11-08-pakistan_N.htm
I know, I know, they haven't happened yet. And it is correct to continue demanding that they occur, and to withold giving Bush credit until they do, but, . . . I point it out because salon never will.
Just as they don't write about the movement of European nations towards US policy (France and Germany), recent positive moves re. North Korea's nuclear production, and of course, the incredibly low unemployment rate, solid stock market returns, and consistent GDP growth.
Remember all the predictions that Iraq would never hold elections, and would never form a constitution?
There's a long way to go. Guys like sidney could never lead you there.

Juan Cole is Wrong
[Read the article: Bush and Musharraf's grand illusion]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Bush DOES NOT "gladly go along".
So much for juan's credibility.

@DianeKovacs
[Read the article: Bush's old world disorder]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Getting up early and facing the day isn't hard for me. I'm not a salonista.
Regarding the "bought" description, thanks for the complement. I'm not a pro, but appreciate the fact that you consider me one.
The link you posted, via the article's title, doubts the likelihood that elections will take place in Pakistan in February. I don't know if they will take place either.
The point I tried to make in my original post was that sidney and salon (and juan cole) are wrong about this story.
Bush is clearly pressuring Musharraf to hold elections, and Musharraf is responding.
Bush is standing by his policy of promoting democracy in the world, as a means of protecting the US, and also for the betterment of the people living under tyranny.
Is it always working well? No.
Are there still people suffering? Yes.
When will salon provide an objective assessment? Never.

Another error that needs correction.
[Read the article: 0-for-40 on Iraq? Not quite]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]On the topic of correcting errors, here's another one.
The Surge IS working. You were wrong.

@heyjude and paulpsd7
[Read the article: 0-for-40 on Iraq? Not quite]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The purpose of the surge is to reduce violence. The USA Today article I cited documents reduced violence. I call that "working".
Nice use of caps paul.

Blackwash
[Read the article: Why Bush's troop surge won't save Iraq]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]This is utterly ridiculous: "Webb was correct to point out that the only truly good news to come from Iraq would be good news regarding the political landscape."
Classic example of reframing a situation in order to "win" an argument.
Of course improvement of the political landscape would be good news. It is the end goal, and we can't take our eye off of it.
To state that this is the only good news is either ignorant, careless, or, you are putting your personal agenda above all else.
When the death rate of US Troops declines, that is extremely positive news.
If you can't separate facts from politics, you can't offer a compelling case to anyone that wants objective reasoning.
You can, however, make emotional appeals, as are used by racists, religious extremists, and some of the worst totalitarian rulers our history has known.
Juan accuses the Bush administration of whitewashing news about Iraq.
Juan blackwashes it.

@Steve Hatchett
[Read the article: Why Bush's troop surge won't save Iraq]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I didn't call Juan's statement ignorant because I disagree with Juan's political view, I did it because the statement is demonstrably wrong.
The recent news citing a reduction in the death rate of US Troops is good news. This contradicts the statement I quoted.
Juan wants us to disregard this good news by saying that it doesn't matter, it's not "truly good news".
That is unaware, uninformed, lacking in knowledge. It is ignorant.
Thanks for your service. Thank you brother also.

Rational Actors Testing Missiles
[Read the article: Bringing Iran in from the cold]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Iran is a "Rational Actor"? According to gary kamiya's method of reasoning, maybe he can draw that conclusion.
I can't.
What do you think they intend to deliver gary?
Iran tests a long range solid fuel missile.

Harry "the land swindler" Reid
[Read the article: Favorite quotes of 2007]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"this war is lost and the surge is not accomplishing anything"
1) The surge has shown to reduce violence over the last several months.
2) Despite moveon.org's claim that General Patreus has "betrayed us", he has actually implemented a strategy that provides hope.
3) Harry provides no hope, no answers, no path to a better place. He's an opportunist, with his statements about Iraq, and his land deals.
