  • @Alecs Mom

[Read the article: New McCain ad misleads on drilling]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I did not state that drilling in Anwar would lower the price of gas. I stated "The more oil that is on the market, the less its price. Econ 101."

If / when oil from Anwar, off-shore, or shale ever makes it to the market, the increase in supply will lower the price of the oil, at that point in time. Supply, demand, and the price of a good or service. That is Econ 101. ...However, if you were instructed at a liberal college or university, you probably received a warped view of the world,...like the econ boneheads who used to argue that the Soviet Union had a good economy.

You state: "Secondly, you underestimate the COST of obtaining the oil in the first place. This is the same problem that you find with off-shore drilling. How much will it COST to get at the oil? How many years before it is accessible on the market?"

No Alecs Mom, I offered no estimate of the cost of off-shore drilling. I have no idea what it would cost. Oil companies should make the estimate, and assume the risk if they see it as prudent. Maybe they'll make money, maybe they won't. I think we should give them the option.

You ask; "Who owns the oil?". I believe that the land in question is owned by the federal government. They can lease it to oil companies.

You suggest; "We, as a nation, need to invest quickly and substantially in new energy sources, as Al Gore suggests."

No, we don't need to do this as a nation. We need to let free-thinking private organizations solve the problem. If you want to offer them incentives (as Bush has done), I don't have a problem with it. The government can offer some support, but they are unlikely to truly solve the problem.

Where I live, a couple wind turbines were installed over a decade ago. In the past couple years, dozens more have been built. It didn't take a lecture from large al gore for that to happen, it took an increase in energy prices, which made the technology feasible.

Econ 101, corporations, and freedom. The stuff that scares liberals.

  • Too Broad of a Conclusion...read yourself

[Read the article: The honorable centrist Joe Lieberman]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Glenn writes; "After John McCain sought Pastor John Hagee's endorsement and then heaped praise on Hagee when he received it, a slew of publicity surrounding Hagee's extremist, offensive and outright crazed views forced McCain to repudiate Hagee and reject his endorsement."

Then Glenn concludes; "Democrats are continuously required to "repudiate" members of the so-called "Far Left" upon pain of being deemed un-Serious, while there is no such thing as "too extreme" on the Right"

Your conclusion regarding "the right" is refuted by your first paragraph.

You disagree with you...slow down and take a breath.

    According to you;

"the obnoxious NYers are really those terribly bright kids from small towns who always felt they were Masters (and Mistresses) of the Universe and came to NYC to prove it."

You might want to re-think that Lee. Your description sounds like one of good old Eliot Spitzer.

Born and raised in the Bronx.

  • Oh! The Outrage!

[Read the article: The parade of "shrill, unserious extremists" on display at today's impeachment hearings]

I have read all the claims by salonistas, indicating that Bush routinely shreds, dismantles, and destroys the constitution. That he lies all the time, and conducts illegal surveillance against people living in this country.

I have also read how eliot spitlizard used the NY State Police to try and nail a political rival, including the creation of false records.

    Link for non-believers: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/23/nyregion/23spitzer.html?ref=nyregion

On one hand you have accusations of torture, on the other you have accusations of a governor using gestapo tactics against a political rival.

Does the motive of these two people matter?

Can anyone offer evidence that Bush is motivated by anything other than protecting us against terrorists?

Could spitlizard's motive have been anything other than trying to protect his party and job?

Is anyone at salon ever going to worry about the democrat criminals,...or will you follow the hypocrite oath, and provide reasons why those sins do not matter?

If you take a look at yourself, you'll understand why you are described as "shrill".

I read your link, and I understand your points regarding teleological ethics and deontological ethics. It reminds me of the Kissinger quote from the time of the Iraq-Iran war, something along the lines of "the best result of this war would be that it never ends". Classic pragmatism, teleological ethics using your speak.

In any case, I wasn't trying to defend Bush as much as I was trying to get salonistas to question themselves. Several of them got pretty torqued off. I find it interesting that they seem to have no concern that the governor of NY used State Troopers to harrass his political rival, that William Jefferson (the guy who tried to hide $90k in his freezer) is still a member of congress, or that clinton lied under oath and was dis-barred.

Some laws are Ok to break, I guess.

I personally wish that Bush had been impeached. I would have loved to hear the pompous blow-hards try and take the high road.

I argue that the one dimensional view that zealots adhere to is an example of seeking a goal, rather than acting on principle.

    Derbag just illustrated my point.

The anti-bush one dimensional zealots, such as direbag, seem only to be able to shout anti-bushisms.

Sins of eliot spitlizard, freezer boy, clintons, and other democrats, cannot even be perceived.

bill clinton's lies under oath are justified, because "blah-blah-blah...",. . . but scooter libby's? . . . suddenly the zealots have something to salivate over.

  • LBJ the Neo-con?

[Read the article: Debut of Salon Radio with Glenn Greenwald: An interview with Dan Ellsberg]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The pentagon papers showed LBJ to be a liar, and a total failure as it relates to the Vietnam war.

    Was LBJ a neo-con?

  • Hey Bald Man

[Read the article: Let's give "Blue Dogs" the boot]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I had an idea to add to your "Let's wait" list.

    1) Let's wait until our courts grant constitutional rights to non-US citizens captured on the battlefield. . . but then, we already did that.
