    Social Security

"While most are motivated by ideological hatred of government, the smartest enemies of the middle-class welfare state have learned to disguise their radical ideology and pose as neutral experts concerned that middle-class entitlements will bankrupt the country. Their scare tactics are based on falsehoods."

The Conservative's goal was not to destroy Social Security, but to find a way to save it. Maybe you don't like their idea of privatization, but the democrat alternative; "do nothing" isn't a solution to the problem. Neither is raiding Social Security money to fund other endeavors. As has been repeatedly demonstrated, Social Security is on the path to insolvency. Read what the late Sen. Moynihan had to say about it. He was not a member of the neo-con vast right-wing conspiracy.

Spew Anything, see if it sticks

"If America's economy-wide healthcare costs are contained, then the influence of aging alone on the costs of Social Security and Medicare will add at most 4 percent to the U.S. government share of GDP over the next century (or less, if today's wartime Pentagon budget is reduced to peacetime levels in the future)."

This is poorly and incorrectly stated. If govt. defense spending went to zero, all other spending would become a larger percentage of the "government share of GDP", not lower. I suspect the author does not understand his source for this supposed "fact".

    Reagan

Please cite Reagan often. He ended the cold war, one that liberalism could have never ended.

    Challenge to Liberals

"The Buckleys and Friedmans have been replaced by Goldbergs and Coulters, and their obsessions -- denying the reality of evolution and global warming and blithering about "Islamofascism" and "liberal fascism" -- are accurately described as "irritable mental gestures which seek to resemble ideas."

List liberal ideas that solve problems. Can anyone come up with more than three?

    Culture War

The author is right. Conservatives lost the cultural war.

  • Liberals = No Ideas

As has been asked by others, what do liberals intend to do when they control the White House and Congress?

What new ideas do they offer to solve our problems?

How will those ideas result in a solution?

If you can't answer that, well, then there is no better comment on the state of "liberalism".

    Number 11 isn't possible, given your suggestions in 1 - 10.

Points 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9 will do anything but bring the debt under control.

Point 1 will cause distrust of the US among those who struggle against tyranny.

Point 2 - sounds like some sort of Scottish bigotry. Maybe the Scots will like it, I don't think others will.

Point 8 - I take it you are an accountant, or involved in a related profession.

Point 10 - Talk is okay. Don't forget the big stick though.

  • Talispin - you have masochistic tendencies

Following Reagan's tax cuts, goverment revenues increased. Now, if you are a victim of liberal logic, you may conclude that revenues didn't really increase as much as they would have otherwise, or that adjusted for inflation they didn't increase as much as when JFK cut taxes, or you may latch onto any other idiotic "fact" that you find, as you try to reframe the question. In any case, following Reagan's tax cuts, goverment revenues increased.

"And America needs to get rid of silly stumbling blocks to investement"

Agreed. But the silly stumbling blocks are not accounting rules, they are CAFE standards, ethanol mandates, capital gains tax increases, ambulance chasing nuisance law suits, and the refusal to drill for oil in the US.

The liberal agenda is; let's have government do it, instead of free markets. That is the ultimate stumbling block to investment.

Does Paul Krugman, writer for the ever decreasing in circulation NY Times make things up?

In the following link you will find paul argue that despite the revenue INCREASES, they weren't that great. He tries to reframe Reagan's success, as is typical of a liberal.

    Increases nonetheless Rue.

I fear you are living on the edge of sanity.

  • Elephantman was right, I bet Glenn agrees

[Read the article: Supreme Court restores habeas corpus, strikes down key part of Military Commissions Act]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Elephantman points out a line in Glenn's column;

"The greatest victim of the 9/11 attack has been our core, defining constitutional liberties."

...and E-man is accused of having no regard or respect for the constitution.

I doubt Glenn really believes the constitution was a bigger victim than were the thousands of innocents who were killed. Maybe he will confirm or correct me. He was probably rushing to post something, couldn't wait to hammer Bush.

To the salonistas who are outraged that Scalia and others argue that the federal government can wield extraordniary powers in time of war, well, what about the draft? You know, the one that good old Charley Rangel suggested we re-instate?

Isn't the military draft a more extraordinary act by the Federal Goverment than is holding suspected terrorists in Gauntanamo? When are you going to call for the impeachment of Rangel?

So today we learned that 5 of the Supreme Court justices decided that the suspected terrorists will be availed the same justice system that was applied to O.J. Simpson....Hooray.
