  • She sure showed them!

I'm sorry, but regarding that scene from Grey's Anatomy... I find it ironic that Broadsheet is applauding the feminist oomph of a gratuitous T&A scene.

"She takes her clothes off -- but she's angry about it! And it totally wasn't a cheap ploy to titillate our audience! No... it was... um... a powerful... uh... pro-feminist moment. Yeah."

In fact, the producers were actually going to have her perform a righteously angry pole-dance during this scene, but it was just too damn heart-wrenching.

  • Or maybe it was Invisible Unicorns!

Haven't we had enough rampant speculation in the media? This theory about the media hatred for Clinton sparking a voter backlash seems like the a different side of the same coin as all the "This is why Clinton will lose New Hampshire" speculation.

Could we all put our crystal balls away and try to gather some actual data about why voters voted as they did? Maybe collect that data, and THEN put together a theory that supports it?

  • Sexual Fascism

[Read the article: "We're all fascists now"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"You know, you have environmental groups giving out kits and instructions about how to have environmentally conscious sex. You don't have conservative groups talking about what kind of condoms you should use or what positions you can be in. That kind of thing doesn't really go on."

I'm sorry, but in what way is this true? Conservatives quite often talk about what kind of condoms to use (none, because birth control is an abomination) and what positions you can be in (none, unless you're married.)

Also, I'm having a hard time imagining which sexual positions are favored in terms of environmental impact. No doggie-style for vegans, maybe? "Dude, the reverse cowgirl is totally better for the environment..."

It almost makes me suspect that he's making this stuff up.

  • What credit card debt?

Sorry kids, nobody gets my money but me. Going straight into a CD.

  • RIGHT ON!!!

[Read the article: Help! I'm a prisoner in a big suburban house!]

Holy cow, rarely have I read such a perfect call-and-response in any column on any subject. Well done, Cary!

My wife and I were almost on the same boat -- we've been saving money for months, and we started looking at houses in suburbia, just to get an idea of what we might be in the market for when we were finally ready to buy.

We were sickened. Where were the places to GO? Where were the gathering points? Where was the community? It instantly turned us into New Urbanism converts.

There's a great video on Ted.com that talks about the horror of suburban architecture and poor urban planning. If you're interested in learning more about New Urbanism, it's an excellent, easy-to-digest place to start. I've put it in my URL field.

  • More importantly...

Why ISN'T there a 'sexy college girls' banner ad at the top of my page? I pay good money for this, and no sexy college girls? I thought this was a classy joint!

    :)

  • Agggh!

It burns us, precious! It burrrrns us!

I'm not sure which is worse... that this was recorded, or that it was recorded ON PURPOSE.

  • Assumptions...

[Read the article: Dr. Laura to Silda: It's all your fault!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Why are we assuming that Silda Spitzer was a victim here? Maybe she gave her husband her blessing. Maybe she liked to watch. Maybe the Spitzers have a basement full of kinky sex toys and a library of home-taped swinger movies. If anyone here knows more than I do, please raise your hand.

We know virtually nothing about the private life of this couple, yet we foist upon them the traditional stereotyped roles -- he the powerful, sex-addicted cad, too arrogant to believe he would ever get caught. She the women-done-wrong, standing by her man in a hailstorm of public scrutiny.

How can you consider yourself a feminist when you automatically approach this issue with the assumption that an incredibly intelligent, Harvard-educated, liberal woman is a helpless dupe?

  • Well said, Linney Uston

[Read the article: Say "nyet" to Russia's vodka for ladies]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Free will's a bitch, isn't it?

McDonald's can market the McCrusty Deluxe at me all they want. They can surgically implant OLED displays in my retinas and stream Ronald's killer-clown grin right into my head 24-7, but I'm sure as hell not buying the damn things.

The problem isn't marketing. The problem is people who can't say no to marketing.

I have to agree with what Linney says -- there's this assumption of inevitable victimhood when we talk about things that are being 'done to' women. As long as that's true, feminists are just reinforcing the idea they're trying to fight -- that women are inherently less capable than men. They can't say no, they can't resist, they can't maintain their own identities in the face of marketing or cultural messaging.

There are plenty of horrible, violent situations in the world where women are literally overpowered. But marketing that targets women is not some form of social injustice.

  • Everyone hates a winner...

[Read the article: The meaning of Starbucks]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Now, I'm not even going to try to argue that Starbucks makes a superior cup of coffee. I lived three blocks from two of the best coffee houses in Seattle for six years, and I learned me some coffee.

But when I'm flying to the middle of East Bumbfugg for work, and my options are some diner's craptastic watery robusta swill or good ol' Starbucks, you had better believe I will push my way through a bus load of old ladies to get an americano.

If you live in a city where you have a Ritual or Victrola or Intelligentsia, consider yourself lucky. And if you enjoy DD or MccyD's coffee, take a moment to thank Starbucks for raising the quality bar for everyone.

But I'll never understand the enjoyment certain people gain by watching a successful American company fall on hard times.

I mean, except for Wal-Mart. Those bastards.

I'll give up coffee if you give up making sweeping generalizations and mistaking your personal opinion for objective fact.
