My understanding is that you don't get a rebate if you make more than $75K and you're a single filer or if you make more than $150K and you're a married filer. I think Andrew Leonard's original piece isn't quite clear on this point. He writes: "$600 for individuals, $1,200 for married couples, or about half as much for those Americans who don't pay income tax at all." I don't think his description is as nuanced as it needs to be.
Only someone who hasn't suffered the oppression and discrimination that women and gay men experience on a regular basis would be ignorant and insensitive enough to use the word "sissy" in order to "push . . . outrage buttons." Strausbaugh comes across more like a school-yard bully than any kind of skilled or insightful writer. How quickly can we make his 15 minutes of odiious fame tick by?
McCain's decided to divorce "n" out of his name in favor of "m," whom he thinks is richer, younger, and hasn't been disfigured by a car accident.
Seriously. Equal rights and equal protection are bread-and-butter Democratic (and "democratic") principles. If Clinton and/or Obama can't articulate that point and win the White House, then the Democrats deserve to lose the election. Likewise, if the voters focus on same-sex marriage as an election issue rather than on the war in Iraq, the economy, the environment, and all the other disasters that the Republicans have wrought, then this country deserves to have John McCain as its president.
McCain's refusal to release his psychiatric records is a major issue. Many thanks to Salon and to Mark Benjamin for this excellent piece. The media are giving McCain a free pass on many things surrounding his campaign. I can only hope that his psychological health won't be one of them. In my opinion, McCain's a nut case on par with George W. Bush.
The level of bile in this article says much about the author. Do you need a vacation, Louis?
If McCain wins the White House in November, we can expect the same dirty politics and the same heartless lack of compassion from him.
This is a truly unprofessional piece, Alex. You should be ashamed of yourself.
In my opinion, Tony Scalia is the most incompetent legal mind we've ever had on the Court.
Alex, you've become the "laughingstock." That sucking sound is your integrity going down the drain.
McCain's "a fraud."
The idea that being a prisoner of war makes McCain qualified to be president is ridiculous. In fact, I think McCain's imprisonment severely damaged him psychologically. I'd suggest that his well-documented anger management issues are a direct result of his long-term confinement. Can the US (and the world) really afford to have another psychologically ill person run the country?--eight years of GWBush and his mentally imbalanced approach to governing have been a disaster. I predict that McCain will self-implode at some point during the campaign: his awkward, strained, false-toothed smile simply can't hide the frightening mania that floats just beneath the surface of the wanna-be leader.
Just more proof that Bush is completely amoral. If the people of the world don't eventually judge and punish him for his high crimes, the karma of the Universe will. No one deserves it more.
A craven vote by Obama. I supported Clinton during the primaries because I was afraid that Obama's professed interest in "working across the aisle" would amount to his giving in to the Republicans and because I thought his calls for "change" sounded hollow. Once Obama became the presumptive nominee, I began supporting him (both financially and emotionally). But his craven vote today has cost him my support. I think he showed us today exactly how little he would change Washington were he to be elected president. What a shame.
Obama's strung us along so much on the VP choice that, at this point, hearing that his choice is Biden or any other the other ho-hum yawn-invokers is going to be a big let-down. If it's not Hillary or Gore or some other big name, this has all been a poorly orchestrated, anti-climactic exercise that makes me question Obama's judgment. Kind of like Geraldo Rivera opening Al Çapone's vault. Or someone opening that great big, mysterious Christmas package that you've been thinking about for weeks only to find out it contains socks and underwear. I wan't Hillary Clinton, damnit, not socks and underwear!
Reports are that Obama didn't even vet Hillary.
Obama's lost my vote.
She's mean-spirited and grossly sarcastic.
Why the need to describe the Michigan Messenger as "a liberal news site" in the piece? Does the War Room add a political descriptor for every news source it mentions?
I've gotta think that the biggest known unknown in this election is the Bradley effect (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradley_effect). I think many of us are underestimating the effect that race and racism are playing in the polls and will play in the actual vote.
That one word sums up McCain's career, his principles, and his campaign.
I've gotta agree with sgsanjose: is the nomenclature "Mormon Mitt" really necessary? Seems kind of snarky to me.
Did anyone else notice that the Obamas stuck around after the debate to interact with the live audience members while the McCains apparently left immediately?
Bob Schieffer is a hack.
She's a maroon!
Couldn't be happening to a more appropriate person!
How can you put Mitchell and Crowley in the same class as Brazile and Maddow? Mitchell and Crowley have been laughable ciphers for decades.
And the world stunningly emerges from the darkness of the last eight years.
I wonder how well George W. Bush would fare in a military prison, placed in solitary confinement, lights on 24/7, being strip searched for no reason, with no entertainment besides reading.
Rendell is a complete buffoon.
I think Gwyneth Paltrow is the antichrist. (How she sprang forth from an angel like Blythe Danner and how she snagged a talent like Chris Martin as a spouse is beyond my comprehension.)
Much of the initial coverage about Fort Hood turned out to be wrong. Is there anything wrong with that?
The accountability imposed by another country for the CIA's kidnapping and torture reveals much about our own.
