Devil's Advocate
[Read the article: Quote of the day]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Okay, I'm going to play devil's advocate here, but bear with me, and I don't necessarily agree with what I'm going to write because I'm a liberal and because I beleive in compassion (especially for Palin's daughter but for all of the daughters who find themselves in a situation like that) but here goes:
The Republicans are all about returning to a simplerer time. A time when the world was flat and created in 6 days and good girls didn't. Or, better yet trying to make a more perfect copy of it full of family values, pulling oneself up from ones bootstratps, and no damn ni- I mean coloreds.
In that world, a girl like Bristol would have been a slut. She had one of two choices in this delicate situation; she would have been shipped off to a convent where evil nuns would have forced her to work in sweatshops until her bastard spawn was born and given to a good Catholic family to be reared, free of the taint of (whisper) illegetimancy. Of course, thats only because she came from a good family. (I might be exaggerating.)
If she were poor, she would have probably been cast from her house and forced to turn tricks and die in the gutter of cirrohsis.
Or she and the boy would have been forced to marry which could have turned okay or could have turned out awful.
Still, if it got out she was knocked out, she would have been ostracized, shunned, branded with a Scarlet A, possibly beaten, etc., etc.
Now, that's what I call a deterrent for teenage sex.
Thats why parading Bristol around like shes a saint is so friggin...hypoctrical in my opinion. What she did was wrong. And she should be punished for it. What sort of role model is she for young women out there? Sure she's keeping her baby, but the fact is, she shouldn't have been letting her boyfriend knock his puck into her goal. And as we know, WOMEN, in republicatopia, girls are supposed to be bastions of chastity. Where was the goalie! WHERE WAS THE GOALIE!

And another thing...
[Read the article: Quote of the day]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]being married and getting pregnant with a down syndrome baby and deciding to keep him doesn't make you a hero. Aquamans a hero.

I got this from the library
[Read the article: Philosophy! Theology! Global catastrophe! Adventure!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]and my brother got Crypticon...on the exact same day which was kind of strange and awesome.
I haven't been able to read it though. I'm terrified. I've been rotting my brain with just awful fantasy and sci-fi for so long, I don't think I will be able to grasp anything he writes.
Its too long, and I will have to renew it and renew it....my brother likes it though.

Whats newsworthy about this...
[Read the article: Was Palin's e-mail hacked?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]is that she's a halfwit and didn't realize yahoo isn't the most secure email out there.
I heard Dick Cheney and his cohorts are fond of using their republican party email addresses so they aren't subject to subpeona; I wonder how secure those servers are in comparison to government servers.
Maybe those hackers should start a new project. Not that I'd advocate lawbreaking, but thats something I would love to see.

Oh, and
[Read the article: Was Palin's e-mail hacked?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I know nothing about hacking, computers, or anything like that other than you turn it on and start typing and hope to god you don't get one of those evil Microsoft blue screens. So if my terminology was incorrect please forgive me...i'm a lover, not a programmer.

Baby Grumpus
[Read the article: The "retarded" renaissance]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]You know, my nephew says things are corny. When I was growing up saying corny was, well, corny.

I spent a semester abroad in Australia
[Read the article: No undie Sunday!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]And I tell you this...my panties would have been hanging on a clothesline. Mixed drinks were so expensive over there back then and buying alcohol at home didn't really help since the tax on that shit was rid-dick-ulous.
All I could afford was VB...and Carlton Cold. Mmmm...Carlton Cold.

95% of Amherst Students living on campus
[Read the article: Amherst's class of 2012: 99 percent are on Facebook]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I think you make good points about most of the writer's statistics, but why do you find it laughable that 95% of the students live on campus? When I went there, they really encouraged students to live on campus nnd pretty much did everything possible could to make it difficult for you to live in the town.
I think I knew of a few kids on campus who chose to live off of campus, but housing in that area at the time wasn't really that great and incredibly expensive. Those who lived off of campuse, unless they were from the area, usually ended up back in the dorms at some point.
Amherst College is incredibly rich, and they have, for the most part, really nice dorms. And a really nice dining hall. Sure, you might have to suffer through sharing a room your freshman year, but usually by sophmore or junior year you got a single. My dorm senior year had a full sized industrial kitchen (Milliken which I heard they tore down) and I had my own bathroom and shower. Why the heck would I live off of campus?
Maybe things have changed since I went there, though. Maybe Amherst (the town) has gotten more apartment buildings, etc, and all of the kids live off of campus. There's just some much competition in town because of UMASS AMHERST.
