  • To the Symbol guy

[Read the article: Blame Muslims for honor killings?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I want to say something about your comment that American law didn't condone the rape, torture, etc of slaves. I'm pretty sure the rape part was an added bonus for slavemasters, since miscegantion was probably illegal at the time, but I'm betting there were laws on the books (probably still are)in the south which said how slave masters were supposed to treat their property. Or at least said they had discretion to treat their slaves A/K/A 3/5 of a person, as they saw fit.

    As to the article:

Basically people like Tina and symbol guy are never going to beleive that there are moderate muslims out there. And Lynx and others are going to say, well, judge not lest ye be judged throw up the ills committed by Christians. I don't know what has made Tina so vehemently anti-Islam (or anti-Muslim, I can't tell) and I do have to say, what happens to women and gay men, and infidels, in those countries scares the hebejebus out of me, but I think the whole debate is ridiculous. But I've read the same friggin argument on countless message boards and to be honest, it's getting us nowhere.

I feel bad the girl was killed in an apparent honor killing, but I feel bad when any person gets killed. Short of wiping out everyone from countries that practice honor killings, I don't think there's much we can do to stop it until they stop it. I don't know what I'm saying...

  • To snub or Not to Snub

[Read the article: Did Hillary Clinton really win in Florida?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Usually, I like AKA Smith, but I am sick to death of the discussion of this supposed snub. Maybe he's pissed at her; so what. He's a human being. Maybe instead of the fake-assery the Clinton's espouse he's willing to show when he's actually upset with someone rather than using Rovian techniques to nip at their heels. Or maybe he's an immature asshole.

AkA, I could say that the reason why you don't "trust" Obama is because he's a black man. I could make that arguement. Not because he's immature, or because of his slightly different take on the issues than Hillary Clinton, but because when you look at him (your words) his blackness offends you which your subconcious mind turns into the more socially responsible term, mistrust. I, however, don't think that's the case, but I don't know your innner workings. Just like I don't know the inner workings of Obama when he "snubbed." Clinton. Or Clinton's inner workings. I don't expect to know the soul of the president; all I want is someone competent who will have the best interests of the country in mind and not his or her little coteire of friends, special interest groups, and future historical laurels.

I haven't read through all of the letters, but AkA Smith's point by point discussion of each eye flick, head turn, etc during a 2-second exchange was really getting on my nerves. It's like tabloid journalism applied to something much more important than whether Britney Spears is wearing panties.

I, still don't know who I'm going to vote for in the primary, but I'm getting pretty sick of both sides going at each other like rabid dogs and taking everything so goddamn personally. Obama and Clinton included. Maybe I'll just opt out and vote for McCain, and worry about the democrats when the big election comes.

  • The black vote (Re: Anonymous)

[Read the article: Sweet home Chicago]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I think it's unfair to say that "racist" blacks voted for Obama. I am a black person who currently resides in the South (but am not a Southerner) and basically, because I couldn't decide between Obama and Clinton, I went online and did one of those policy tests. It came up I was 78% compatible with Obama and 73% compatible with Clinton. So I chose Obama. Actually, I was the most compatible with Mike Gravel, but since I had no idea who he was, I went with the next choice. Even if blacks heavily favor Obama, I don't see what's wrong with that. I think a lot of white people don't understand what it means for some people down here to be able to vote in an election with a viable black canidate. Not to mention how it feels to have a viable female canidate. I actually got misty eyed when I saw the ballot with the Clinton and Obama's names on it. It's not racist or misandrist to understand how historic a moment like this is.

I think if Clinton wins nomination, all of these black "racists" down here will vote for her. Not just because she's the democratic canidate, but because people like her (though some folks are a little angry at Bill for making the Jesse Jackson crack) and feel hopeful she'll do a good job. I had the chance to talk to a lot of people while in the hour I waited in line at the polling place.

And another thing; I'm really sick of all of the snottiness between Clinton supporters and Obama supporters. Most of ya'll know you'll vote for whoever wins the nomination. And both of them are pretty capable people; it's just getting silly at this point. All of the demonizing of Obama (cocaine sniffing lightweight) and Clinton (cold hearted snake) is just going to make it harder when one of them wins the nomination. Like the old lady in front of me said in the line, I'm just happy we're finally rid of George Bush. Maybe all of the character tests going on now will make it so the general public is sick of hearing about it during the general election and we can get back to looking at policy.
