Assorted Anonymous posters and your named friends:

Let's all just agree to disagree with the Farakhan comments. I think it speaks to a larger issue I've found in these letter threads, though. How is it that people can have such a different interpretation of the exact same words? We're not talking about points of policy, but matters of impression. It seems to me that everything Obama says is parsed 3-hundred different ways, and to be honest, each reading is as valid as the next. Whether his response shows his anti-semitism, a double standard for black politicians, his brilliant wit, well how can we, the American public, really know for sure. It's all opinion, baby.

I've also heard Obama compared to Ray Nagin, George Bush, Jimmy Carter, George McGovern, the debil (just kidding) and Reagan but I don't understand why so many people are quick to compare him to anyone. Even if you say McCain means 4 more years of Bush's policies, no one thinks McCain is actually like George Bush in temperment. Hilary Clinton is just Hilary Clinton to most people, whether you love her or hate her. (I did read an Evita Peron reference, but that hasn't caught on...yet.) Is it too much to ask that we wait for the historical comparisons until we (if we actually do) actually him in action during the election? Or when and/or if he becomes president and is in the position to make policy? To be honest, if he is president, I don't think he'll be like any president we've ever had, whether he's terrible or wonderful.

    That is all.

Everyone in my office was cracking up over this...even the girl who voted for Huckabee in primary (shudder.)

I've definitely used the anonymous function when discussing matters that are private but I think it's a great idea. It stops trolls from hijacking a thread and posting opposing viewpoints to feed the flames.

Also, it means that you have to stand by all of your letters. I think it will make people more thoughtful about what they write when they know anyone can go back through and read everything you've ever said.

Having said that, I want all of you to know I change my opinion a lot, so if I said something a few months ago, there's a chance I might have changed my mind.

Maureen, this is an article not a blog entry. Only the writers of blogs really engage with their readers. I doubt he's going to publish a retraction, and since whether or not the Royal family has some semitic/arabic/connections seems to have denegerated into a back and forth discussion for almost the whole of this thread, I don't see why he should write one.

I apologize if this sounds mean, but really, who CARES! I remember studying European History in high school, and I watch the Tudors on Showtime (not for historical accuracy but because the guys are HOT. Too hot for that time period, to be sure. Unfortunately, from what I can tell from portraits, if the Royal Family wasn't engaging in misceganation they really needed too...ugh.) but, to be honest, the lives of a bunch of guys in tights (unless it's Crazy Eyes Rhys-Meyers...heck even old-ass Sam Neil looks good in that red dress) isn't that important to the discussion.

Now, having said that, It just goes to show that we are all part of the same tribe. Even back when there weren't airplanes and steamships, people managed to get around. Americans, erroneously, seem to forget we are a melting pot or a salad bowl. I mean, Obama and Cheney are COUSINS for chrissakes.

  • I will watch this movie

When it comes to cable, probably not in the theater. I like historically inaccurate movies because 1) you can feel superior discussing all of the mistakes 2) usually the inaccuries make for a better movie because of the constraints inherent in the art form. If you want the true story (whatever that means) read a history book. I think movies like this are a good jumping off point for people who might be interested in the time period (maybe even younger folk) to do some research.

Having said that, I think Stephanie is smoking crack if she thinks Philip Seymour Hoffman would be or could be sexy. I know sexiness, like comedy, is completely subjective, but c'mon. His sausage fingers, his voice...he gives me a plate of heebie, hold the jeebies. I think he's a fine actor, but he grosses me out. Kind of like Forest Whitaker.

  • Am I the only person who likes Will Ferrell?

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!

I don't like every Will Ferrell movie, and Semi Pro looks stupid, but there are a few performances he's done in the past which I think are hilarious:

Old School - I especially love the bit where he gets shot by the tranquilizer and gets mouth to mouth from Sean William Scott. I'm laughing just thinking about it.

Anchorman - A whales vagina. 'nuff said.

Wedding Crashers - Hooking up with horny widows.

It's a matter of taste, of course, but I think Ferrell does best when he's in a group. Like in Anchorman; the best parts of the movie were when he was rolling 4 deep with the other reporters, getting in a rumble or beating up some bears. (Yeah, Brick killed a guy..)

If he should be shot for anything, I would say it should be for Bewitched. That was an abomination.

I completely forgot about that Robert Goulet impression on SNL. Oh my god, do you remember when he did Robert Goulet sings Gangster Rap? Every time he said the N-word or Bitch or used any of the hip-hop-ese, in that characteristic Goulet voice, I died. I'm going to you tube to look that clip up as soon as I finish writing this.
