tomreedtoon - Regulars around here all know you think you are smarter/wittier/more eloquent than Heather. Nobody cares.
There are plenty of avenues for an aspiring writer/critic to vent his views in public. They are called blogs. Get one. Write your own weekly column, filled with your delicious wit, your endless supply of television trivia, and your contempt for HH. Advertise it here, I'm sure everyone would love to read your stuff. If its truly better than Heather's, we will all flock to your blog in droves.
I'm so fucking sick of your "I am better than Havrilesky" screeds every week. You are pathetic. Get a life. Stop whining about how much you think she hates everyone and how much you think her writing sucks. If you can do better, prove it. Start a blog, attract an audience, and get your own writing gig. It happens all the time.
TRT - Can't you ever post anything without sliding in a dig against Heather? You have serious issues. Did you like her predecessor (Carina Chocano)? It's obvious that Heather's style is not your cup of tea. We get it, you don't like her, move on. What else have you got to say? Obviously, the majority of us (and her editors at Salon) like her. Your childish rants and pompous ramblings are tedious and are not serving to advance the discourse.
Moving on...
30 Rock will likely die an ugly death if Baldwin is allowed to leave, and it's too bad. NBC hasn't had a killer comedy lineup since Seinfeld left and now they are just getting things working with the Office/Scrubs/30 Rock grouping. All 3 are on the top of my Tivo list and I laugh out loud every week.
"Real America", as defined by people like TRT, is composed of people who look, act, and think just like him. In "Real America", there is little room for disparate opinions or lifestyles. "Real America" is in the mind of the beholder and is usually a pretty sad and lonely place.
For the record, I believe Heather has mentioned in earlier columns that she currently resides in "The Southland" (Southern Calif.) and hails originally from North Carolina.
Tom hates her because she drinks latte or some other "fancy" (i.e. non-"Real America") coffee and isn't down with the people enough for his taste. He also seems to hate her because she gets to keep cranking out a funny (in a snarky, sarcastic tone) TV column every week and he doesn't seem to have the ability to tune it out and get his TV criticism/commentary elsewhere.
I love ILTW and now I'm starting to enjoy TRTs weekly boorish pseudo-intellectual follow-up letters just as much. It's fun watching this ass-clown embarrass himself with the same whiny complaints week after week.
I nominate the new airport in Kuala Lumpur (KUL) as one of the nicest airports - very clean, lots of shops and restaurants, and a very pleasant experience. It compares well with SIN and other newer airports in southeast Asia that have been mentioned.
My home base is IAD and I agree that it belongs on the "worst" list - not just because of the Star-Wars era people movers, but mostly just because it is so damn UGLY! The newer "B" terminal is nice enough, but the C/D terminal (one l-o-n-g hallway) is abysmal. Low ceilings, dirty floors, bad food, and nothing to look at or do if you are stuck waiting for any extended period. No WiFi (not even the pay-as-you-go type) except if you hover near the doors of the Red Carpet Club (where they have conveniently omitted any public seating).
I recently had a round-the-world trip (DC - Australia - Africa - London - DC) and ended up flying UA, Quantas, and South African airlines. All in coach (except for an upgrade from LHR to IAD).
United, by FAR, was the worst of the bunch. They fly 747-400s from LAX to SYD that have not been changed since first commissioned sometime back in the early 1980s. Coach class still has the sections with 1 big movie screen in the front, which cannot possibly be seen by anyone who is not in the first couple of rows in the middle. The seats are horribly uncomfortable (for all the reasons already mentioned), and the food was disgusting. Ah, but its ONLY a 14 hour flight. Gross.
I also flew economy class on Quantas and South African and had a much better experience. The E class on those airlines (on similar wide-body, long-haul aircraft) was well equipped - large (7" or bigger) personal video screens on every seatback with video ON DEMAND full of current movies (and old classics), TV shows, music, and even little games you can play with your own personal controller that retracts into the arm. It makes the whole trip go much faster when you have decent entertainment like that.
Business class on the United 777s still has shitty 4" screens and a crappy limited selection of movies that run in a loop (not on-demand). The biz seats are comfortable, but the amenities still suck. United should be embarrased, their fleet is aging poorly and they clearly don't give a shit about their economy passengers.
As far as banning frequent flyer programs and upgrades from miles - SCREW THAT. I live for upgrades, especially on long hauls. My company certainly won't pay for a biz seat (even on super long flights), and getting the upgrade is a real benefit to me (even if they do keep jacking up the miles you need to get them). That said, even as a Premier Exec flyer, it is increasingly difficult to clear an upgrade for any flight these days. Either everyone has higher status and is ahead of me, or there are a LOT of people oaying for their biz class tickets.
FYI - the "he who disagrees with me sucks cock by choice." line was a reference to Deadwood. Ahhhh, Deadwood, R.I.P.
