Forgot to add

Accepting yourself for who you are requires you take responsibility for who you are. Kate has not done that what She has done is found justification for her weight in genetics and a book. Finding out your genetically predisposed to storing calories as fat tells you nothing about what made you obese in the first place. You still made decisions on the diet you chose and the intake of food. As someone else said weight gain is simple physics if you eat more than you use you gain weight.

You are a sucker if you believe a word Kate Harding says on this subject

If Kate Harding didn't write for Broadsheet, then we'd be writing about Kate Harding. As one of the leading voices of the fat acceptance movement, Harding writes about body issues with a trademark intelligence and wit.

This is why broadsheet is a joke. Kate Harding is a hack in the truest sense of the word. Discussing with on broadsheet is ironic as the only thing that passes as humor on this site is mean spirited snark mostly directed at doctors, researchers, women with different politics, women that are skinny, scientists and evolutionary psychologists. I have no idea what you want to call intelligence but not reading studies that you are commenting on and missing the point are really not my idea of intelligence which is Kate Hardings real trademark.

Kate- I did Jenny Craig when I was 22 and lost 65 lbs. over the course of eight or nine months, got down to a size 4. By the time I was 27, it was all back -- along with five or 10 extra pounds -- so I went on Jenny Craig again, because, hey, it "worked" the last time.

It did work as your goal was to lose weight and you lost 65 lbs. It took you 5 years of I am sure shitty eating and no activity to gain that back. There is this thing called personal responsibility that Kate lacks. If this is a sign of Kate's intelligence the word is losing meaning.

First of all, I had never heard anyone say it was possible to be simultaneously fat and healthy before -- Campos introduced me to the concept of Health at Every Size, for which I will be forever grateful

This is the big lie of the book and Kate. While I will go with possibility that there is 350 lbs person that is healthy with no joint issues and you can be healthy at any weight this is just an excuse for Kate. Kate is lying to you and herself. She has admitted to smoking to this day. This might seem to be nitpicking but it is her selling this bullshit and she needs to be called out on it. She recently wrote a post about picking out quiche. So its not like she cares all that much about healthy eating or she thinks organic means healthy (which it does not). So if she wants to go around happy about her body fine go ahead no one is stopping you even people disgusted by your weight. But, don't lie and pretend you are healthy.

This story is not about healthcare but questions on what equality is

It is a given that are current healthcare system needs major reform. It makes sense that a single payer or a nonprofit insurance system like Germany will lead to lower costs as the pool of participants is larger to subsidize the sick and to get better overall pricing. There is the fundamental flaw for the free market side on this issue that individual coverage can not compete with employer subsidized care no matter how shitty or great it is. In our current system, this will have no effect in changing coverage levels if anything it will lower benefits and raise cost for men.

What this is really about though is what is equality. When discussing insurance it cost more if you are in a high risk group or you use your benefits more. An example your homeowners insurance cost more in Miami, Florida than it does in Kansas City, Missouri because Miami is at a much higher risk for claims. If women use more benefits than the fair thing to do is to charge them more. Like how males until they are married are charged more for car insurance. This is equality have the same responsibilities for your risk group as men do. If you want laws like this to pass go ahead but be honest that you want a benefit because of your gender.

Of course they are going

Of course they are going to talk about her weight as that is one of only two things that has made her news worthy in the last 2 or 3 years. Her music career seems to be over with her country label dropping her. Its been 2 years since she was in a movie. So the only things to talk to her about is Tony Romo and her weight. The demo for VF is not exactly the demo of football fans. Even if it was, you would have cowboy fans that blame her for the playoff losses and the rest that just laugh at cowboy fans. So the only hook for her to even get this interview was her weight. Her weight is the biggest thing to happen to her career since her MTV show 6 or 7 years ago.

.

"I admire her class and courage, still I can't help but to wish her a little less courage and a lot more privacy."

I don't get this quote. She choose to write a book and she choose to do a high profile promotional tour. In other words she choose to bring this story back from the dead.
