Original article: Does my butt look fat?

Anonymous_Too

A lot of what we know about weight and health comes out of what are known as "data dredges". These are not controlled studies, only computer searches for correlations within the existing body of information.

Correlations are not causation. Let me repeat: correlations are not causation. Any "study" that is really a data dredge is not giving us any useful information. Even less useful is how new information is reported. I've seen more than one study spun to fit the existing assumptions, even when the results contradicted them.

Do you believe that smoking does not cause cancer also? There is never been a study that shows that it is smoking that causes lung cancer it is all statistical inference.

The data mining tools used do not have to show that obesity is the cause to say being fat is bad. It is enough that an increase risk of disease is present in a condition like obesity. It does not have to be obesity as the cause but obesity and these other disease can have a common cause and obesity is an early indicator. And since we know that a proper diet and exercise prevents obesity that will also lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes and the rest.

Why the glee?

If you have an Ipod you should be saddened by this news. If MS decides to kill the zune team there is no one that will push Apple to improve Itunes. The Zune software is now a better place for music discovery with zune pass, mixview, fm to buy, and the social than anything Apple offers. These are features that you should want Apple to incorporate in the product to make it better. More importantly you should want Apple to follow the firmware program MS has. A new feature on Ipod means you are dropping a few hundie on a new one while with Zune you get those features on even the original models.

But, I forgot if MS does something it by definition sucks and if Apple does something it is by definition a new paradigm for mankind. Apple has never did anything wrong and there whopping 4 percent marketshare goes to prove that while the billion Windows users are all idiots. And Itunes along with quicktime on PC is text book definition of stable code that no one ever has problems with.

No wonder why they want to be

free from the scrutiny of feminists. Yet another group of women that feminist can make fun and be above.

green eye

Astonishing how The Jim seizes this as an opportunity to bash feminists. Wonder what he'd do if he had one of these ladies hanging around his neck cooing for diamonds by the yard.

Astonishing how feminist hate on so many different groups of women. It is the feminist here calling these women the scum of earth not me.

And FYI, since I care most about my happiness which requires finical comfort I don't get involved in relationships where I spend money on others.

Best BS article ever

Actual reporting in BS is amazing please keep it up. I wish these laws where off the books but unfortunately it appears they are here to stay along with more similar laws from the teetotalers out there. It is only a matter of time before these laws go into effect against women that drink during pregnancy on the basis of FAS. Despite there never being a case of FAS from a women that drinks less than 35 drinks a month. If a pregnant women has a glass of wine in public the reaction is the same as if she is violently shaking an infant.

Icelus

TheJim, laws against alcohol during pregnancy would be reasonable, or at the very least a pregnant woman having a glass of wine really ought to face social censure as if she were violently shaking her baby

Moderate, meaning 8.5 drinks a week, consumption of alcohol has never been shown to be a risk to fetuses and have shown no ill effects to new born.

http://www2.potsdam.edu/hansondj/FetalAlcoholSyndrome.html

Every study ever done has shown that it requires very high levels of alcohol in a single sitting before a fetus is at risk.

There is no safe level of alcohol consumption during pregnancy (your 35 number is either wrong or out of date), and alcohol is a potent neuroteratogen, specifically targeting brain development.

This sounds like the classic zero tolerance teetotaler nonsense. Of course there are safe levels of alcohol consumption the problem is where is the upper line of safe. We come into contact with very small levels of alcohol every day hell our bodies produce it. And of course drinking a bottle of jack a day is extremely high risk of causing FAS. The question is where is the line and the studies have shown that it is much closer to the bottle of jack a day than it is a glass of wine a day. So of course we should throw the person in jail that has a glass of wine and where the studies have shown has 0 risk in large scale studies.
