Allie

Talk about not having a clue. If you want to respond to me argue against what I actually said instead of making a strawman.

The problem of women who won't leave their abusers has been studied at great length. The problem is that abusers don't start by beating a victim black and blue; they start by messing with the victim's mind. The abuse gradually ramps up and the victim is gradually separated from reality until things are happening that the victim swore she (or he) would never let happen.

I have addressed this several times. No shit abusers don't start in with the hitting you know how I know this I already have said this in a previous post a page before yours. What I did say is a person needs to get the fuck out at the first sign instead of believing that the abuser will change. In this day and age you have to actively avoid the world to be ignorant of this. The warning signs are not that hard to see. Some one that controls what you can or can't do, get out. Friends telling you that the guy/gal is trouble get out. Someone controlling your time get out. These behaviors make themselves known early when there is still time to get out.

I don't know if there are studies that show this but from anecdotal evidence but the victim almost always believe they can change the other person. Guess what no one can change another person. My best friend is a Det but when he was on the streets he told me of the hundreds if not thousands of DV cases he dealt with some form of "s/He will change" could be heard from the victims. The victims are mentally sick and need treatment.

It's all very well to say, "She made her bed, let her lie in it," but it accomplishes nothing

Where did I say anything even remotely close to this? I didn't I said not to treat them as victims and instead treat there damn illness. I want abusers behind bars but when a victim recants there is nothing that can be done. Now if when the arrest happens the officers or DA explain to her that she needs to visit a specialist to treat her for her illness other wise there is nothing that can be done there will be more assholes behind bars.

The thing about your lack of compassion is it isn't USEFUL

This is down right funny. I actually have compassion, ignoring the problems of the victim is a lack of compassion. Say we have a victim and send her abuser to jail s/he is likely to go on to find another abuser that will beat her. Because there is something wrong with their minds.

How is the ill-will of a nasty internet troll going to persuade such a person to leave? And we want them to leave. We want them to leave not just because we are little liberal nice folks, but because people who are beaten are a problem. They don't show up to work on time. They have hospital bills they can't pay and children they can't raise. They make work for police departments who have to investigate when they are murdered.

I noticed you left out the biggest societal cost. All the times the police are called out for a DD and the victim later recants, refuses to press charges or is uncooperative. Because we treat them as victims instead of sick we can't press charges against them for filling false statements as that would be punishing the victim when that charge could be used as leverage for the victim to receive treatment that they need or to force cooperation to send the abuser to jail.

I am not saying you have the belief but there is this belief especially from feminist about a magical justice system that can just punish bad people. It does not work that way there needs to be evidence to convict these assholes. The primary evidence is going to be the victims testimony.
