This is the most ridiculous article yet on broadsheet which in itself is an accomplishment. Its almost offensive in the way it insults the intelligence of anyone, man or women, that reads this and more than that insults women basketball players at Florida State and well everywhere.
she hugs a basketball like she might her non-existent date
Tell me a single person that has ever hugged a date like that. That photo is a pose used for decades when photographing basketball players. Shit, I probably have some photos like that from high school team pictures.
We're shown a shot of another beautiful young lady wearing precious pearl earrings and a shoulder-baring dress, while staring directly into the camera with her smoky eyes.
Give me a break. Those earring where not exactly straight off of the academy awards runway. They look like a pair of earrings that someone might wear casually to class and even playing basketball. Just like the other 8 pairs or so shown.
The video introduction does show us several snapshots of the girls with sweat pouring down their faces and posing in their actual jerseys -- scenarios that are actually relevant to the game
They show men in suits and not football uniforms in the football section. What do suits have to do with football? The men's basketball team also has photos of the players in suits instead of uniforms. SEXISM.
Each player has a bio paired with a photo of her in a shiny dress lounging in or against a limo
They are also paired with 4 to 5 other photos of them in the basketball uniform. There is also a several sections where the players are shown touring Africa, the US and just goofing around.
As a university press release explains, the intended message of the site is: "Women athletes are powerful and beautiful" -- assuming they're gussied up like princesses, apparently.
Riiiight. Or it could be a message to young girls that you can be both a great athlete and still dress up. What is the best part about this is the school despite being known as primarily as a football factory decided to give the women's basketball team the first dedicated site. Not the football team that finished in the top 5 for over a dozen straight years including 2 national titles and several championship games. Not the men's basketball team that is expected to finish in the top 4 in the ACC this year. Not the men's track team that has won national titles. But, the women's basketball team. I am proud of my school today and I don't care about women's basketball but now that I have seen this site and checked around some other sites, I will probably go see a few games this season and hopefully a few home games in the tournament. Oh, and thanks to you for bringing this to my attention because this will lead directly to money going into the program.
Alice Dreger is not a scientist or a doctor she is a philosopher that broadsheet writers have on several occasions now implied strongly is an actual scientist or doctor. And while this an area where a medical ethicist has a world of insight the quote used in this post is not one of them and is instead a technical question about sex differences and testing which is the domain of actual scientists.
Second, I feel bad for Semenya I really do. She has been used by too many people for their own gain. That said she is a rare outlier and there is not a realistic solution that is fair to her and others like her. There is just not enough people like her that also compete in sports to have a viable third classification and she does not have enough advantages of being a male to compete against other males but she has far too many advantages of being a male to compete against women.
Sex segregation is the only viable option to women participating in sports in anything resembling even semi elite levels. Skill segregation is an idea that was proposed by someone that never played or watched sports. A female tennis player no matter how much they train is never going to beat a top ten male player even though they have the same skill level. The size idea fails for nearly the same reason. At most serious levels a male and a female athlete at the same weight the male is going to have more muscle mass, be stronger and be faster. The biochemical idea is an expensive way to get to the same general classifications we have now. If we did that Semenya would be competing in the best case against other inter-gender athletes but most likely against men. We are at the same place as we are with sex segregation.
