the bathroom

We only have one toilet at home, and it seems to work fine for both men and women.

a poor case

This is the best case So could compose? Seriously, after all the qualifiers "I'm a feminist..." what we get is a poor case indeed:

-parents aren't required to provide consent for all medical procedures. This is one of So's first and most compelling claims. AND IT IS WRONG. This is a basic argumentation skill that most people perfect in Freshman comp.

-suggesting that parents will react to their daughter's pregnancy with 'grounding them'. This can't be serious.

-completely ignoring the high rates of sexual abuse occuring within the family

The young women of the state of California deserved a better articulation of what possibly could be a reasonable argument to support this measure. Unfortunately, So doesn't provide it.

One important point that another poster brought up to support the measure is that teens are stressed when their pregnant. I agree it is probably a stressful, if not traumatic time. However, I also think that parents are also likely to experience some stress. Asking parents to see their *children* as not only sexual beings, but potential parents must be stressful. I'm sure some parents handle it well, but I think a simple equation of parents=calm rational and pregnant teen=irration is simplistic at best.

pre-pregnant bodies

If they were serious, they'd provide real care to the 'pre-pregnant' by providing free health and dental care; clean, safe drinking water; a safe food source; safe neighborhoods; etc, etc. All of these things can just as easily cause problems for the 'pre-pregnant's' future fetus.

But to *just* focus on women's eating, drinking, and smoking habits without looking at the egregious social problems of health care, housing, employment, and the food and water sources in this country is a nothing more than making health care an individualized rather than social issue. Individual women* will bear the sole responsibility--not the govt, and certainly not the rest of society.

* I am still waiting for the phrase 'pre-sperm provider' to enter the lexicon.

Original article: Imus offends

fire him already

As a Rutgers' alumnae, I'm very disappointed and saddened by these comments. Clearly, Imus has no clue as to how long and hard these women have worked to become the stellar athletes they are today. And most of the current roster is from the NJ/NY area, these girls are representative of their communities.

If Imus is really serious about recognizing how insulting his comments are, he should raise money for next year's team and attend games to draw attention to women's collegiate sports.

In the meantime, I hope there's more attention on this team's success and this year's efforts aren't reduced to a sick racist rant.

Go Scarlet Knights!

if this isn't a terrorist attack

then I don't know what one looks like.

When the 9/11 terrorists used airplanes, we made our interaction with airplanes a whole lot more complicated. But when someone clearly terrorizes a college campus, we're not even going to consider the fact that handguns are quite insidious?

Guns 'fall into' the hands of many, many people--long before they go 'bad.' In many instances, people need the gun in the first place to go 'bad' because they lack other resources to get the attention they need. Without a handgun, what would this guy's options have been?

you can't get the test for Down's until

18 weeks.

My husband and I already decided that if I am carrying a down's baby, I will abort. I don't think my state is one of the ass-backwards states supporting this heinous legislation, but it sickens me that unwilling parents are going to have to raise a child that they don't want.

Where are all the small government conservatives when you need them? They don't want to pay for "illegals" but are more than happy to have to help me pay (via medical and supervised care for the rest of its life) for a child that I don't want?

This ruling isn't just a "stunning assault on women's health" it is a stunning assault on my family's ability to decide our future.

And I disagree that this will be the losing battle that loses the war. I don't think I am looking through rose-colored glasses when I say that this 'battle' (although I loathe the war metaphors) will be won by cultural norms. Despite what sex-hating conservatives would like, the next generations will be more liberal sexually, not less. This legislation is the result of a small but vocal and powerful minority that lies and cheats and steals its way into political office.

if 'pro-life' people were really pro-life, they would

not make pregnancy--and the resulting child--a punishment for having sex.

not carry signs with pictures from abortions of "dead babies." (You don't treat people you respect by blowing up a huge picture of them "dead" and using it to scare people. If it is a "life," then respect it.)

spend their time and even money giving to families in need.

(I'll omit the death penalty and war references because, let's admit it, no side is completely without hypocrisy in their opinions. I think this short list is specifically applicable to pregnancy and parenting--the topics that 'the abortion debate' is really engaging.)
