  • Falhaar - thanks

    Thanks for answering my question.

For some reason, it seems to me the recent spate of superhero movies have featured surprisingly good drama punctuated by poorly shot action scenes. For example, I thought Spider-Man 2 was near flawless as a comic adaptation but the CGI'd action scenes were terrible. The action choreography in Batman Begins bothered me a lot, although I understand The Dark Knight is more of a crime drama about ideas than an outright summer blockbuster. I'm a fan of Hong Kong action cinema - in addition to being a fan of comic books AND independent / foreign films (take that!) - so it bugs me when a film that calls for what amounts to a lot of martial arts muddies up the action.

ANYway, maybe I'll catch a matinee of The Dark Knight on Sunday. The main draw for me is Heath Ledger as the Joker - he is creepy as hell in the commercials and reminds me a lot of the violent psychotic conception of the character I liked in "The Killing Joke" and some of the better comics.

Bringing up McCains flips is not a legitimate response to whether or not Obama's position is politically motivated.

    That's sort of true, but:

    1. Unless you can read minds or we're going to start forcing our candidates to take lie detector tests, discussing whether Obama's position is politically motivated is a total waste of time. It's also sort of beside the point, since the an incorrect position based on principle doesn't do us much good.

    2. Bringing up McCain's flips doesn't make Obama's better, but it does beg the question(s): Does John McCain believe it's never okay to change your position? And if so, why has McCain changed so many of his positions over the years? Vague charges of flip-flopping, like so many other things about McCain's candidacy, come off as desperate.

And the whole thing is moot, since Obama has always said he would adjust his strategy based on the situation on the ground. I don't think Obama necessarily needs to be on the ground himself to get a clear assessment of the situation.

    My two cents.

To all the supposed Democrats complaining about Obama, ask yourself a question: If John Kerry were the nominee, how would he deal with these kind of attacks? Probably by burying his head in the sand and trusting that his unimpeachable service in Vietnam made him immune from criticism. Then he'd prove that he's a regular Joe by inviting the press to film him windsurfing.

It may come off as petty and make Obama look bad at times, but trust me: If you really want a Democrat in the White House you should be thanking your lucky stars that Obama is your guy, because the man knows what he's doing in ways that Gore, Kerry and yes, Hillary Clinton will never understand. And he will be elected your next president in the fall. Write it down and take a picture.

If Obamabots want to come crawling to me begging for my vote after they spend so many months making it clear they didn't give a shit about me (or people like me), they can save their dignity and their time now.

Nobody gives a shit who you vote for, numbnuts.

First, Jeb: Obama leads McCain by 9 points among women according to the most recent polls I've seen. I don't think he's too worried.

AKA Smith: I would never tell someone to "grow up" just because they don't support Obama. You have every right to your vote. I tell people to grow up when they continually pat themselves on the back with stupid comments like "If the Obamabots think I'm going to support their candidate they've got another thing coming!"

Get over yourselves. You don't like Obama and it's clear that under no circumstances would you vote for him. Yet you come here every day with this fantasy about an army of Obamabots begging you to come back into the fold. You are the most unhinged kind of voter and Obama would be an idiot to even try to pander to folks like you.

    Serioulsy, we don't care.

According to you, Obama supporters have called you racist and told you to grow up because you won't vote for him. This seems more like your persecution fantasy than something that's actually happened.

I can only speak for myself, but I've never told anyone on Salon to grow up or accused anyone of racism for a failure to support Obama. But I have seen a handful of people like jeb on Salon who visit every day to tell us once again that she won't vote for Obama.

"Grow up" seems to be a pretty good response to that kind of behavior.

  • Among many dubious claims ...

[Read the article: Quote of the day]

... this one really stands out:

Like W, Batman sometimes has to push the boundaries of civil rights to deal with an emergency, certain that he will re-establish those boundaries when the emergency is past.

Problem is, the war on terror is never really going to end so there will always be occassion for pushing the boundaries of civil rights to deal with this open-ended "emergency." And Bush administration has shown again and again his willingness to use his expanded powers not just to combat terrorism, but also to protect his cronies and hide evidence of corruption. Batman might bend the rules to stop the Joker, but he doesn't routinely break the law to cover his ass just because it's more convenient than doing things the right way.

This article is unintended self-parody at its finest.

Another album of technically proficient but deadly boring industrial music with Reznor screaming vague accusations against pronouns ("You did X to me! You make me feel Y!")?

    Shocker.
