  • Excellent- thought provoking piece

[Read the article: Coretta and Hillary, not yet free]

I think this piece is excellent. I will save it and review it at leasure. I am someone who is very wary of "icons" and who while being a "wild left winger" is an anti-clintonian, and especially disrespect Hillary- but this piece was very thought- provoking and I will refer to is often. I had no idea of Ms. King's prior history. Thanks for all your fine work. Tatiana Sundquist, Los Angeles

  • Couldn't agree with you more

    [Read the article: Our Alice]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I'm an attorney, married to a professor and writer and often help him edit his work- I'm also the mother of three daughters. At the moment, working on a big legal brief, I'm always seeking escape from the task at hand. Yesterday I read the

Alice piece and was- as you were- totally bowled over. It's lovely, and makes one wish- or at least, this one- that I was the kind of person "Alice" seems to have been. I'm not aware of having read some of "Calvin's" work, but maybe I will now. Again- It is an absolutely smashing piece. Tania Sundquist, LA

  • Mz Martha

[Read the article: "I didn't like sex at all"]

My first doubt arose when I saw M's quoted letter to E.Roosevelt "Spain is much too beautiful to be left to the fascists- the decent people should have it." I paraphrase. Exactly what does that tell us- If the country is already ugly, then the fascists making it "ugly" is ok.and thus we don't have to fight for, or on its behalf.

Its interesting that what this book is about are her Letters- and not her various articles. Is there a collection of these transcendant (sic?) pieces that would justify our interest in her? She is

obviously an "ugly", person. One doesn't need to be told by the "author-compiler" that M is angry- her words convey it quite well. The fact that many quite good authors- I don't know about "great" ones, that word is very very cheap today- are lousy people is known, but seems to me that they transformed their world view- or their supreme egoism - to a certain extent- in their works, and thus their works (forgive inartfulness its still early) stand on their own. Nothing in MG's oeuvre seems to rise to that level.

Finally, for people interested in this "stuff" I would recommend reading the fascinating biography of a beautiful, flawed and very talented woman- read "Dangerous Muse" the life of Lady Caroline Blackwell. You might also read her books- "Great Granny....." "The last duchess" ....Now there is a woman of an altogether different magnatude.

  • WHERE IS YOUR HEAD GLENN?

[Read the article: Presidential candidates and "substance"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

First of all- Disclosure- I am an Edwards supporter.

HOWEVER- I am beyond astonished to read Glenn's statement that Obama is the only candidate who is advancing "A new vision" or something to that effect (can't get back to article without losing what I'm writing. EDWARDS is the one who constantly talks about TRANSFORMATIONAL CHANGES, AND WHO CLEARLY POSITS BIG CHANGES OF DIRECTION IN FOREIGN POLICY AND DOMESTIC POLICY. Yes, and then he gives specifics. But just because he gives specifics doesnt mean he doesn't first Give the Big General statements. If Glen were not doing that which the MSM does all the time- make general statements without backing these up- maybe he could write an article contrasting Edwards' "big statements" with Obama's, and then maybe he COULD TELL US WHAT HE BELIEVES O'S AND THUS PREFERS O'S TO E'S. That would be more accurate and informative.

  • The Michelle Obama factor

[Read the article: Barack Obama's quiet rebellion]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I am afraid that what I'm about to say is going to raise great hackles-so I want to hearby state that: I am a long time leftist Democrat-I am a NY/CA person who is as truly color blind as is possible. I am also extremely cynical and skeptical about the intelligence and the essential "goodness" of the American public.

OK Here goes. WHen I saw the picture of Michelle and Barack Obama at the head of your story I was hit by the following thought. American Woman in many, many places..see heartland, south DO NOT AND WILL NOT WANT TO SEE A BLACK WOMAN AS FIRST LADY. I don't care what they or others say... THEY WANT TO SEE SOMEONE WHO LOOKS LIKE THEM AND MICHELLE DOESN'T. This is going to be one of the many elephants in the room. I will spare you the rest of what I could write, because you can fill in the blanks. Personally, I have never given a rats...about any of the "First Ladies" including the iconic Jacqui.

Ok now I'll sit back and take the hits.

  • Nomogen's Ad Hominem Response

Hey Nomogen What are you talking about?

    1. If you were a little better versed in history/world/languages you would know that my name "Tanouche" is the Russian cute name for a female named "TATIANA". THUS I AM NOT A MALE

    2. I do not belong to the 40% of Americans who are not ready for a Black First Lady. I stated that I was a NewYork/Californian leftist Democrat. I AM READY FOR A BLACK FIRST LADY..

    3. I have spent time/lived in Kansas and Tennessee- know these people and KNOW THAT THEY ARE NOT READY FOR A BLACK FIRST LADY.

FINALLY- You have a perfect right to say what you wish- However, it would have been better to simply say that you disagreed with my assessment of Americans rather than tar me with the brush that I use to tar others-- But whatever.

  • "On Chesil Beach"--Dover Beach

[Read the article: "On Chesil Beach"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Are the reviewer and the letter writers so estranged from English litterature culture that they don't connect the title of this book to Matthew Arnold's seminal poem about loss of faith and call to love as solace- "Dover Beach". At this point I'm not sure of the connection between the book and Arnold's poem, but McEwan can hardly have failed to have the latter in mind when choosing his title.
