His timing is based on the results from another state that show poor uneducated white voters don't know how to vote in their own interest. thus, raygun democrats. Edwards can, and will, be an ambassador to that segment of the voting public. they mean well, but they are not politically involved. He can explain, as he has so eloquently done many times before, why the democratic party is the party of working people, and not just white ones.
