He sought them out. He went for Bush. He started making his votes more conservative. He sought out Hagee. He sought out the "agents of intolerance." And then, for the convention, he knew he had to rattle the bars, and what did HE do? He went hard, stupid right. HE DID THAT. He's always been loved too much by the press. He wasn't that good, ever. He's now treated harshly -- but generally honestly -- by the press. He's not that bad, probably, but he stinks pretty bad now, and John did it to John. No more breaks for McCain.

McCain didn't drop out of the race in South Carolina. He went on, and he won some races. He even made robocalls against Bush that implied he was anti-Catholic. He's just never been as keen as the press thought he was.

The rampant man-love that Brokaw feels for McCain could not have been more obvious. Tom apparently believes his own ghostwritten books. I remember his commentary on election night 2000, until Jonathan Alter brought him up short with the fact that should have been obvious that night: we were facing a contested election, and Gore would not concede. And then, he was the one who compared 9/11 to Pearl Harbor, as if a foreign power had bombed us. He's gotten more and more unreliable over the decade, and his partisanship and buddy porn couldn't have been more obvious. In fact, the panel that was least sympathetic to McCain's travails was... FOX.

I was in a Catholic college that year, taught mostly by Irish Jesuits and laymen. They were almost to a man ecstatic about Kennedy. Irish, Catholic. Inevitable. Even the conservatives were exhilarated by the run of somebody like themselves.

However, what Powell said was obvious to any person this year, and still more clear to the person whose good name was soiled by his UN speech. He gave a ton of good reasons why. What a craven thing it is to brag about Powell for years, because he's "post-racial," and now, he's just another black man. For shame.

Powell had the possibility of being a moderate Republican president like Eisenhower. But he picked the wrong party to back.

He didn't commit crimes in office. He succeeded in creeping out some of the weak sisters out there. Big deal. Ask yourself: with the kind of scrutiny that Clinton got during his term, with all the attempts to criminalize him, this is what they got? Mumblefarts.

What did Clinton DO in office? Why did he have nearly 70% approval on the day he was "impeached"? This era in American politics was truly ugly, and it wasn't Clinton that did it, but the same crazy coots who are disgracing the McCain (adulterer, liar, friend of lobbyists) campaign with their ridiculous charges.

I think Miller and some of the left are also infected by this distate for real human sexuality -- not right, but it didn't give anybody cancer, didn't burn anybody to death, didn't torture anybody, and didn't fail to answer a subpoena.

Clinton was a better man than the 90s would allow.

You're a stinking sexist of the worst kind. You evaluate EVERYTHING in terms of your measly, male-oriented macho. It really is nothing. The worst part is that you SAY you're a feminist. You wouldn't know a principled position if you tripped over it. Your brain is made of Swiss cheese. Good-bye.

I supported Hillary from the get-go. I think the Clinton-haters need their head examined. But I forget where it was I read that Obama devised his brilliant strategy for the nomination -- and it came straight out of carefully reading the bylaws of the Democratic Party. He won. The Hillary campaign was of the '90s, and Obama was of the Oughties. Slick.

So what? This is called politics. The Democratic Party chose Obama, and so I jumped on with him. It's been a very good ride, so far. The Clintons both jumped on with both feet at the convention. Bill is a harder competitor, and it will take him a while, but he will do his job when asked. But the main thing I think he'll settle on the the Clinton Foundation. He wants to raise money for causes, so being an absolute party loyalist -- saying negative things about McCain, or anything that would dry up his fundraising, is not something he'll do.

Hillary is the new lady-in-waiting of the Democratic Party. She will be the good soldier. But Bill? Bill is the last sitting Democratic President, and he was the head of the party, and then the ex officio head. Now he's been dethroned. He's made it clear on many occasions that he supports Obama, just not to the extent the remaining Clinton-haters want him to. He will never do enough for them.

Just before "intellectually disadvantaged." Before, there was the horrendous -- and wrong -- series of terms invented by the proto-eugenicists: moron, simpleton, idiot -- I forget the whole list. What that was a "euphemism" for, I forget.

But intellectually challenged people are and always will be the butt of jokes. I wish it was otherwise. But 'twas ever thus. The retarded -- "held back" -- will be attacked most viciously by those who presume to be above their level.

He was chosen because he'll ask softball questions. Remember the shameful ABC "debate" which tried to get Clinton and Obama to 'fess up that they really were anti-American? That asked questions that really belonged on the Hannity show. Ol' Uncle Charlie is a secret warmongering nutbar. Or so it seems.
