Elizabeth Edwards said not a word about endorsements at any time, yet the fact that she didn't appear with John at the Obama rally is thrown about as "significant." Based on what? Then, she writes in to Politico and that nest of political gossips and right-wing Drudge types. No, she never said she would "endorse." She's made statements that are supportive of Hillary's health plan -- really, the Edwards plan -- as she should. Nobody has given me a convincing reason why Obama wimps out on this issue. However, she, and I, will gladly support the nominee, and I bet she will be still urging at least for the Edwards plan, and maybe better -- single payer. This is the way adults commit politics, see?
Meanwhile, the Huffington Post highlights the (non-factual) refusal to endorse HILLARY. Well, she's not endorsing Obama, either, see? She's satisfied with the choice of the people, and meanwhile will lobby for health care reform that really deserves the name.
I don't think that gay marriage in Cali is going to be the killing proposition that it used to be. I think it might very well fail. There will, presumably, be a tidal wave of the young to the polls this fall, and guess what? They think, statistically, that's it's just fine. They have gay friends. They don't think gays are circus freaks or pathological.
The California anti-gay initiative will fail, and the new era will be here. Meanwhile, it won't be a wedge against the Democrats. People are quite bloody-minded about getting rid of the old, so even if the initiative succeeds, it fails.
It's Twitter. Once the twitter mob goes against you, you're sunk. It doesn't matter what you say, it's always spun against you. Ever hear some stirring moment from a Bill Clinton speech for his wife? No. They have portable cameras following him around, taping every word, and they show two-minute segments where he's angry at a heckler. Forget the fact that what he tells them is perfectly logical and defensible. No, Maureen Dowd will tell us what happened. The clip is shortened, and the IMPLICATION they take from it will be tut-tutted, examined, seen in the long term, and compared to the Monica press conference. Too much information makes us idiots.
By the way, in case all you Obama supporters think I'm a disgruntled old white working class man, otherwise known as a Nazi, think back 15 minutes in campaign time. Whose remarks were being cut to pieces to make him sound like a villain. Who were the talking heads tut-tutting about then? Point taken.
Hillary was trying to find a reason why the supers shouldn't go over to Obama. She has one remaining thing over her: older working class whites still vote for her. So she tried to make that an "electability" problem. Guess what? Didn't work.
For which she gets vilified, by Joe Conason no less, and somehow as bad as George Wallace. Really? Hillary wants Segregation Now, Segregation Forever? Well, no. She thinks black people are inferior, and should be kept from equal rights? Well, no. Not at all, in fact. This is the same mean-spirited "interpretationism" that zeroed in on the word "bitter." I'll really be happy when this gotcha season is over.
Hillary as a racist is as stupid as Obama painted as Huey Newton, though they'll try.
What Obama supporters have to ask themselves is, are those white holdouts really racists? I don't think so. And whether they are or not, you're going to need their votes.
Look, I maintain the basic outlines of the Iran comments were not "obliterate," but reaching out for a new strategic policy as we withdraw from Iraq. You can kneel in obeisance all you want, Joe. They'll throw you under the bus anyway, because you said nice things about the Clintons. Too late. Welcome to being 2008's Susan MacDougall.
The "racist" comments? What kool-aid have they been offering to you, Joe? You got a new master now? The racism was all race-baiter from the Obama camp, with the intent to bottle up Bill and make it impossible to criticize the opponent in any way, because somehow they'd get race out of it. "Saying I'm inexperienced, huh? Racist!" The Obama camp simply repeated the canards that the right had prepared for them, and the big name millionaire pundits agreed from the start, and the liberals never did like the Clintons much. Give it a rest about the "legacy." In two years, nobody will remember the mugging of Hillary Clinton. She'll have a career in the Senate, and who knows, politics is a funny business.
Now, that worthless fool Russert, and his buddy Matthews -- that's where the finger-pointing should go.
